On Saturday, President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of the Supreme Court, focusing on rulings involving tariffs and birthright citizenship. In a Truth Social post, Trump called the decisions faulty and political and claimed they had cost the country trillions of dollars. The president did not provide a calculation supporting that figure. He said the rulings had damaged how people become citizens and described the court’s recent record as a sad chapter. The statement continued a dispute between Trump and the court over limits on presidential authority. On Saturday, a new Trafalgar Group poll showed Republican Ashley Hinson holding a narrow lead over Democrat Josh Turek in Iowa’s open U.S. Senate race. The survey placed Hinson at 44 percent and Turek at 42 percent after interviewing likely voters from Wednesday through Friday. The two-point difference indicated a close contest for the seat being vacated by Republican Senator Joni Ernst. The New York Times polling tracker listed the Trafalgar survey as the newest poll in the race. Other recent surveys have produced different leaders or ties, reinforcing uncertainty. The poll is a snapshot of voter preference, not a prediction of the November result.⁶

Newsom Signs Broad California Election Package

On Saturday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a 13-bill election package that creates new crimes for interfering with ballots, election records, voting equipment or mail ballot delivery. One measure makes unauthorized seizure of ballots or certified voting technology a felony before results are certified. Another requires local officials to notify the state attorney general and secretary of state within one day after certain warrants, subpoenas or investigations involving election materials. The package also expands language access, regulates deceptive campaign media and permits wider restrictions on electioneering near polling places. The laws combine criminal penalties, disclosure rules and administrative requirements intended to protect voting and ballot handling.⁷

California Restricts Other States’ Guard Deployments

On Saturday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation requiring his permission before military personnel from another state, territory or the District of Columbia enter California for military duty or law-enforcement work. Senate Bill 1354 preserves an exception for forces lawfully placed in federal service under Title 10 and acting under the president or defense secretary. The governor’s office said the law addresses a gap involving National Guard forces that remain under another governor’s command under Title 32. Newsom said California’s Guard should serve residents rather than intimidate them. The measure establishes a state rule for future interstate deployments without limiting properly federalized troops.^{8, 9}

South Dakota Election Chief Endorses Democrat

On Saturday, South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson, a Republican, endorsed Democratic nominee Terrence Davis to succeed her instead of backing Republican nominee Heather Baxter. Johnson said voters should look beyond party labels and that Davis was prepared to protect the office. Baxter defeated Johnson for the Republican nomination at the party convention in June, 59 percent to 41 percent. Baxter responded that the party label tells voters which governing philosophy a candidate would bring to the office. Davis thanked Johnson and acknowledged that they do not agree on every issue. Republican state House Speaker Jon Hansen criticized Johnson’s decision and urged support for Baxter.^{10, 11}

Newsom Signs Bill Expanding E15 Fuel Access

On Saturday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 795, removing a regulatory obstacle to selling E15 gasoline in the state. E15 is gasoline blended with as much as 15 percent ethanol. The governor’s office said the measure allows more Californians to access the fuel and may diversify the state’s supply. The bill follows earlier legislation that authorized E15 sales, but retailers still faced equipment-related requirements that delayed distribution. The new law allows existing vapor-recovery equipment to dispense E15 when manufacturers submit compatibility statements to state agencies. Both chambers of the Legislature passed the measure unanimously before it reached Newsom’s desk for signature.¹²

Trump Announces White House Ban on Three Outlets

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were banned from the White House, effective immediately, because he objected to their coverage. Trump Orders Tighter Review of H-1B Visas

On Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing closer coordination among federal agencies that administer H-1B visas for specialized foreign workers. The order instructs the State, Labor and Homeland Security departments to consult economic and education agencies when reviewing applications, petitions and visas. Officials must consider whether sponsoring employers conducted layoffs during the previous year or plan layoffs affecting similarly situated American workers. The Labor Department must begin reviewing earlier employer filings within 30 days to determine whether enforcement action is warranted. Trump said the changes are intended to reduce program abuse and protect domestic workers while preserving visas that meet federal requirements.^{3, 4}

Appeals Court Rejects Swift Third-Country Deportations

On Friday, a federal appeals court rejected a Trump administration policy allowing rapid deportations to countries other than a migrant’s homeland without a meaningful chance to raise safety concerns. The First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel upheld a February ruling that found the Homeland Security policy unlawful. Judge Seth Aframe wrote that migrants must receive notice of the intended destination and an opportunity to contest removal based on fears of persecution. The court reversed one part concerning whether officials must first seek countries where migrants have ties. All States Join Medicaid Drug Pricing Plan

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico would participate in a Medicaid prescription drug pricing plan. Under the GENEROUS model, manufacturers will provide rebates intended to keep final Medicaid prices for covered brand-name medicines from exceeding prices paid in other developed countries. The White House said the program includes hundreds of drugs across major treatment categories. Its Council of Economic Advisers projected savings of $36.6 billion for the federal government and $27.6 billion for states over 10 years. The pharmaceutical industry warned that importing foreign prices could reduce investment in new medicines and treatments.^{7, 8}

Justice Department Halts Young Adult Handgun Ban

On Friday, the Justice Department said it would not criminally enforce the federal prohibition on licensed dealers selling handguns to adults ages 18 through 20. The department’s Office of Legal Counsel concluded that the restriction violates the Second Amendment because those adults are among the people it protects and handguns are commonly used for self-defense. The opinion controls executive branch legal policy but does not erase the statute or bind courts. Gun safety groups said the administration misread constitutional history and warned that the law still exists. Federal appeals courts remain divided over age-based firearm restrictions, and existing state laws continue to apply.⁹

Newsom Orders Faster Review of AI Safeguards

On Friday, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order accelerating state oversight of AI systems and seeking recommendations for stronger safeguards. The order directs the Government Operations Agency to speed implementation of two AI auditing laws and consult experts. Within two months, the group must propose changes, including independent safety reviewers inside AI labs and an emergency shutoff for advanced models. Newsom also asked experts to consider independent verification of company safety plans, transparency reports and risk assessments. The governor urged federal officials to use California’s framework as a national baseline, but the order begins a state review rather than imposing every proposed measure.^{10, 11}

Arizona Court Strengthens Public Records Rights

On Friday, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that government agencies violate state law when they destroy public records after receiving a request. The court said judges must independently review an agency’s decision to withhold or redact documents, rather than defer to its judgment. The ruling arose from a University of Arizona professor’s requests for records about hiring and appointment practices. The university destroyed an audio recording after offering to let him hear it without providing a copy. The justices returned the case to a trial court and said records obtained before litigation can count when deciding whether a requester substantially prevailed for attorney fees.^{12, 13}

Minnesota Opens Early Voting for General Election

On Friday, Minnesota opened voting for the November 3 general election, beginning a 46-day period for absentee voting by mail or at local election offices. Election officials started mailing ballots to voters who requested them. A new early voting process begins October 16, allowing voters to place completed ballots directly into tabulators instead of returning them in absentee envelopes. Ballots mailed back must reach election offices by 8 p.m. on Election Day, while hand-delivered absentee ballots are due by 5 p.m. Minnesota permits residents to register while voting early or on Election Day. Statewide contests include governor, U.S. Senate and other constitutional offices.^{14, 15}

Senate Stalls Bipartisan Data Center Ratepayer Bill

On Thursday, Senator Martin Heinrich, a New Mexico Democrat, blocked an attempt to pass the bipartisan Ratepayer Protection Act by unanimous consent. Senator Jon Husted, an Ohio Republican and the bill’s sponsor, sought quick approval after the House passed it 417 to 3 on Wednesday. The measure would ask states to consider standards making data centers cover costs for new power generation, transmission lines and other grid upgrades. Heinrich said voluntary state action would not adequately protect consumers and offered his GRID Savings Act instead. Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno objected to Heinrich’s proposal, leaving both measures stalled in the Senate. ^{1, 2}

Judge Strikes Down Federal Anti-DEI Grant Policy

On Thursday, a federal judge struck down an Education Department policy directing the cancellation of teacher-training grants connected to diversity, equity and inclusion programs. U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley ruled for eight Democratic-led states and found that the department had offered no clear standard for identifying programs it considered DEI. She also said officials failed to consider the effect on teachers and people preparing to enter the profession. The directive led to the cancellation of more than 90 percent of grants in two federal programs, including 40 grants involving institutions in the plaintiff states. Claims seeking lost money must proceed separately. ³

Judge Requires Notice Before Kennedy Center Changes

On Thursday, a federal judge ordered the Kennedy Center to provide 30 days’ notice before making major physical changes to its main building, including any demolition. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper issued the order while denying Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty’s request for an emergency hearing. Kennedy Center executive director Matt Floca said in a court filing that the building’s current closure was temporary, initially planned for seven days and subject to weekly review. Cooper also directed the administration to provide a sworn report on the closure and emergency repairs by Wednesday. Beatty is challenging the center’s plans and President Trump’s proposed changes. ^{4, 5}

Institute Seeks Court Block on Trump Name Carving

On Thursday, the U.S. Institute of Peace and former board members asked a federal appeals court to stop the Trump administration from carving President Trump’s name into the institute’s headquarters. Their emergency filing said a formal request for the work had been made and a contractor selected. Trump’s name was attached to the building in removable lettering last December, when the administration renamed the congressionally created institution. The filing argued that permanent alteration of the privately supported building’s design would cause irreparable harm while litigation over the institute’s leadership continues. The White House had not responded publicly to requests for comment. ^{6, 7}

New Polls Show Narrow Michigan Senate Contest

On Thursday, two new polls showed Democrat Abdul El-Sayed holding a narrow lead over Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s open U.S. Senate race. A Washington Post-Schar School survey put El-Sayed ahead 48 percent to 45 percent, while an Emerson College poll placed him ahead 48 percent to 46 percent. The seat is open because Democratic Senator Gary Peters is not seeking reelection, making Michigan a major contest as Republicans defend their Senate majority. The surveys also found differences by education, with Emerson reporting stronger support for Rogers among voters without four-year college degrees and stronger support for El-Sayed among college graduates. ⁸

State Level

Washington Court Voids Natural Gas Ballot Measure

On Thursday, the Washington Supreme Court invalidated Initiative 2066, a voter-approved measure intended to protect natural gas access and limit state and local efforts to discourage its use. The justices ruled 6 to 3 that the initiative violated the state constitution’s single-subject requirement because it combined four distinct policy areas. Chief Justice Debra Stephens wrote that the court could not determine which subjects voters would have supported separately and could not preserve individual sections. Justice Sal Mungia dissented, arguing that much of the measure could remain after removing some provisions. Washington voters approved the initiative with 51.7 percent of the vote in 2024. ^{9, 10}

North Dakota Court Upholds Youth Treatment Ban

On Thursday, the North Dakota Supreme Court unanimously upheld the state’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors, affirming a lower court ruling. The 2023 law makes it a crime for providers to prescribe puberty blockers and certain other treatments to adolescents for gender transition. The court found that minors have no fundamental right to a particular course of medical treatment and that the law regulates by age and medical purpose, not sex or transgender status. Pediatric endocrinologist Luis Casas argued that the measure discriminates and interferes with health care decisions. Attorney General Drew Wrigley said the ruling respected constitutional principles and legislative authority. ^{11, 12}

Texas Poll Shows Hinojosa Leading Abbott

On Thursday, a ReconMR poll showed Democratic state Representative Gina Hinojosa leading Republican Governor Greg Abbott 49 percent to 45 percent among likely Texas voters. The result reversed the firm’s July survey, which placed Abbott ahead by one point, while other current polls continued to show different results. ReconMR surveyed 614 likely voters from September 8 through 11 using telephone and text-to-web interviews, with a 4.3-point margin of error for the core questions. The survey also found Hinojosa ahead on affordability and water management, while Abbott led on border security and public safety. The candidates are competing in the November gubernatorial election. ^{13, 14}

House Votes To Limit Trump Iran War Powers

Newsom Signs New Wildfire Recovery Protections

On Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed four bills strengthening mortgage and insurance protections for wildfire survivors. Two measures require state agencies to develop standards for testing and cleaning lead and asbestos contamination in smoke-damaged homes. Insurers must cover qualifying testing, cleanup and restoration, and they cannot end additional living-expense coverage before a home is safe to occupy. Two other measures extend mortgage protections for disaster-affected homeowners, including a longer forbearance period for Los Angeles fire survivors and options to defer missed payments. Newsom signed the package in Altadena while meeting with survivors, advocates, community leaders and the bills’ authors. ¹⁰

New York Sets Data Center Investment Standard

On Tuesday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul released a voluntary framework advising communities how to negotiate benefits from future data center projects. The guidance recommends that developers provide at least $1 million in community investment for every megawatt of electricity a facility demands. Local governments could seek support for roads, water systems, housing, schools, child care, workforce training and other priorities. The framework also recommends public engagement, annual reporting and careful limits on nondisclosure agreements. It was developed during the state’s year-long moratorium on new hyperscale data center permits, which remains in place while officials prepare environmental and utility rules for future projects. ¹¹

Hochul Expands Utility Discount Enrollment Drive

On Tuesday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul launched a statewide campaign to enroll more households in the Energy Affordability Program, which provides monthly utility discounts. State officials estimate that about 2.5 million additional households qualify, while nearly 1 million are already enrolled. Eligibility was expanded in January to include households below the state median income, with separate area standards in New York City and three suburban counties. The campaign will use direct mail, email, text messages, advertising and enrollment events. Discount amounts depend on income, and the program is designed to keep a typical participating household’s utility costs below 6 percent of income. ¹²

Trump Calls AI Safety Fears A Total Hoax

Jeffries Presses Congress To Act On AI Now

Speaking at his weekly news conference, Jeffries said the risks were “very real” and rejected the president’s description of them as a hoax. Trump Nominates Wesley Hunt As Saudi Envoy

President Trump on Monday nominated Representative Wesley Hunt of Texas to serve as ambassador to Saudi Arabia, sending the choice to the Senate as part of a batch of nominations. The post has been filled on an interim basis since Trump began his second term in January 2025. Hunt, a West Point graduate and retired Army officer, was deployed twice to Saudi Arabia as a diplomatic liaison. House Democrats Target Medical Debt Garnishment

House Democrats on Monday introduced a bill that would bar employers and courts from garnishing workers’ wages to collect medical debt. The measure would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to prohibit such garnishment and would prevent any state or court from ordering or enforcing it. Under current federal law, up to 25 percent of a worker’s take-home pay can be garnished. Representative Greg Casar, a Texas Democrat and co-author of the bill, said “nobody should lose their wages because they got sick.” The proposal faces long odds in the Republican-controlled House, where leaders set the floor schedule.⁸

Poll: Democrats Lead Republicans On Generic Ballot

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Monday showed President Trump’s approval rating rising to 35 percent, up from a record low of 33 percent in late August. The four-day survey found Democrats leading Republicans 44 percent to 37 percent when voters were asked which party they would support in November, the widest gap since Trump returned to office. About 63 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Trump’s proposed $5,000 dividend, including four in 10 Republicans. Voters also gave Democrats a narrow edge as better stewards of the economy, 38 percent to 37 percent, the first such Democratic advantage in roughly a decade.⁹

Newsom Won’t Run For President If Harris Does

California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Monday that he would not run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 if former Vice President Kamala Harris enters the race. “I wouldn’t run if she ran,” Newsom told CNN in an interview posted Monday, adding that a contest between the two Californians would waste voters’ time. Newsom said their shared political base, dating to their years in San Francisco politics, would leave them competing for the same supporters. He said he did not know whether Harris would run. Harris, the party’s 2024 nominee, has said she has not decided, while Newsom has laid groundwork for a bid.^{10, 11}

Kemp Endorses Collins In Georgia Senate Race

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp on Monday endorsed Republican Representative Mike Collins in the state’s U.S. Senate race, months after backing a different candidate in the party primary. In a statement, Kemp said he and Collins share a commitment to Georgia and called the congressman a “commonsense leader” who has delivered results. Collins is challenging Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, the only Democratic senator seeking reelection this year in a state Trump carried in 2024. Collins said he was honored by the endorsement. A spokesperson for the Ossoff campaign said the endorsement would not change the race, pointing to Kemp’s earlier support for Collins’s rival.^{12, 13}

Trump Says Canada Trade Deal Could Come Soon

Trump said Canada has to treat American farmers better and cannot charge them tariffs, and he said a deal would likely follow once those charges were removed. Asked whether he was considering withdrawing from the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the president said no and added that the country was doing great. He also said the United States had been treated unfairly by Canada for fifty years.⁵

Trump Links End Of Iran War To Midterm Vote

President Trump told reporters on Saturday during his visit to Ireland that he expects the war with Iran to end very soon, and probably right after the midterm elections in November. He said Iranian leaders are trying to hold out as long as they can to complicate the election, and he added that he believes American voters understand what is happening. Trump also predicted that oil prices would come tumbling down once the fighting stops. The president did not describe any change in American policy toward the conflict, and he did not say what led him to that timetable.^{6, 7}

Cruz Presses College Sports Bill Before Senate Vote

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas appeared on Saturday on ESPN’s College GameDay in Austin, before the Texas game against Ohio State, where he spent just under eight minutes urging passage of the Protect College Sports Act while the crowd booed. The bipartisan measure, which Cruz sponsors with Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington, would require reporting of name, image and likeness agreements worth more than $600, ban side deals that circumvent fair market value, require agents to register with their states, and grant athletes five years of eligibility. A Senate vote is expected this week. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut opposes the bill.⁸

Kansas Governor Rivals Clash At State Fair Debate

Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson, the Republican nominee for governor, and state Senator Cindy Holscher, the Democratic nominee, debated on Saturday at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson before a packed and frequently noisy crowd. Masterson said he would be the most pro-agriculture and pro-business governor in state history, and he described Holscher as a socialist and the most radical candidate ever on a Kansas ticket. Holscher answered that she is no socialist, and she faulted Masterson for failing to deliver property tax relief during his six years leading the Senate. They also divided over data centers and private school vouchers.^{9, 10}

Hochul Opens Buffalo Field Office For Democrats

Governor Kathy Hochul joined New York Democrats on Saturday in Buffalo to open the party’s coordinated field office on Seneca Street, ahead of her November race against Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Hochul pointed to her record in office, including new cell phone policies in schools, more than $10 billion in tax breaks for families, and checks to help residents pay their utility bills. She told supporters that she is proud to serve as governor and that the work is making people’s lives better. She appeared with lieutenant governor nominee Adrienne Adams and Representative Tim Kennedy of Buffalo.¹¹

Ohio Democrat Presses Cost Of Living Message

David Pepper, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor of Ohio, campaigned on Saturday at the Jefferson County Democratic Party picnic, where he told voters that the cost of living is the concern he hears most often across the state. Pepper said people feel overwhelmed by the cost of everything, and he pointed to diesel and gasoline prices, child care, and health care. He said residents of Steubenville had told him that child care is so expensive locally that some families cross into West Virginia to find it and then return to work. Pepper said property taxes are too high because schools are underfunded.¹²

Appeals Court Rejects Trump Coal Plant Order

On Friday, a federal appeals court rejected the Trump administration’s emergency order keeping Michigan’s J.H. Campbell coal plant open past its planned retirement. The unanimous three-judge panel said the Energy Department exceeded its authority under a Federal Power Act provision reserved for electricity emergencies requiring immediate federal action. Michigan and environmental groups challenged the order, which Energy Secretary Chris Wright first issued in May 2025 and repeatedly extended. The ruling concerns the original order, while Consumers Energy said it would continue following the current 90-day directive as it reviews the decision. Trump-Linked PAC Expands Midterm Ad Campaign

On Friday, political advertising researchers reported that the Trump-affiliated No Going Back super PAC had reserved more than $74 million in advertising across 15 House races and six competitive Senate contests. Judge Blocks Political Question On Federal Job Applicant Form

On Friday, a federal judge ordered agencies to stop asking applicants for most federal jobs which Trump administration policy or executive order matters most to them. Judge George O’Toole Jr. found that unions challenging the question were likely to succeed in showing that it violated applicants’ First Amendment rights and federal administrative law. The question appeared in applications for positions at grade GS-5 and above under the Office of Personnel Management’s Merit Hiring Plan. The stay remains in force until further court action. OPM must notify agencies that used the question within seven days and declined to comment on the litigation. ^{4, 5}

Trump Signs Disaster Tax Relief Into Law

On Friday, President Donald Trump signed legislation extending federal tax relief for people who suffer losses in certain federally declared disasters. The law allows qualified casualty losses above $500 to be deducted without itemizing and without the usual threshold tied to adjusted gross income. It covers eligible disasters beginning after December 27, 2019, and before January 1, 2027. It also excludes certain wildfire relief payments from taxable income for federally declared fires occurring after 2014 and before 2027. The Congressional Budget Office and Joint Committee on Taxation estimated that the measure would reduce federal revenue by $408 million through 2036. ^{6, 7}

Justice Department Uses Dormant Removal Court

On Friday, the Justice Department announced the first completed case before the Alien Terrorist Removal Court, a specialized federal court Congress created in 1996. Afghan national Nazira Haji Zada was removed from the United States after conceding that she met the law’s definition of an alien terrorist and waiving an appeal. The court issued the removal order on August 20 but unsealed it Friday after her return to Afghanistan. The government said she supported family members’ plans for an ISIS-inspired Election Day attack in 2024. The court permits classified evidence while providing appointed counsel and access to federal appeals. ⁸

State Level

Texas Court Blocks Midcycle County Redistricting

On Friday, the Texas Supreme Court blocked Galveston County from using precinct boundaries that county officials redrew after the March primary. The unsigned opinion directed the county to use the same map for the November general election, saying state law requires elections to be conducted uniformly and consistently. The new boundaries, approved June 29, affect county commissioners, constables and justices of the peace. A constable and two residents sought emergency relief, arguing that changing precincts during an election cycle was unfair to voters and candidates. The court said the county may use the new map after November, although separate legal challenges remain pending. ⁹

Florida Cabinet Sets Terrorist Designation Rules

On Friday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the state Cabinet held an emergency meeting to establish procedures for designating domestic and foreign terrorist organizations under a law enacted this year. The chief of domestic security may recommend a designation, and the governor and Cabinet may approve or reject it by majority vote after receiving notice. Approved designations must be published in the Florida Administrative Register. A targeted organization may submit a written objection and later challenge the designation in Leon County Circuit Court. State law bars public agencies, local governments and school districts from funding or contracting with organizations once their designations have been published. ^{10, 11}

Nebraska Certifies Ballot After Legal Challenges

On Friday, Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen certified the November general-election ballot after a series of lawsuits involving candidates, political parties and ballot measures. The ballot includes three citizen initiatives covering online sports betting and sex-separated school athletics, plus a legislative proposal that would extend state lawmakers’ term limits. Ten candidates petitioned onto the ballot after the May primary, including nominees from two newly recognized parties. One proposed amendment concerning legislative changes to voter-approved laws was excluded after a state Supreme Court ruling Thursday. County officials must send the first completed ballots to military and overseas voters by September 18. ¹²
