Sen. Lindsey Graham Dies Suddenly at 71; Senate Seat Now in Play
U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, one of President Trump’s closest and most loyal allies in Congress, died Saturday evening, July 11, from what his office described as “a brief and sudden illness.” Graham was 71 and had served in the Senate since 2003, winning his Republican primary for a fifth term just last month. President Trump reacted on social media, calling Graham “one of the greatest people and senators I have ever known.” With the general election scheduled for November, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster is expected to appoint a temporary replacement. Graham’s Democratic challenger, pediatrician Annie Andrews, had been considered a long-shot in the heavily Republican state. 1, 2, 3
