Trump’s July 4 Speech Hits Communism and Mail-In Voting
President Trump took the stage on the National Mall at 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, more than four hours after the original start time, after severe thunderstorms forced the crowd to evacuate the grounds for roughly two hours. In a roughly 30-minute address, he praised the founding fathers, touted American military achievements in the Iran conflict, and called communism the nation’s greatest internal threat. He also used the occasion to urge Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, his voter ID and mail-in ballot restriction bill that is stalled in the Senate. A massive fireworks show, billed as the largest in the nation’s history, capped the night. 1, 2
Trump Pardons 11 on July 4, Including GOP Donor
President Trump issued 11 pardons on Saturday afternoon, July 4, describing the recipients on Truth Social as men being freed for ‘fixing their car.’ Nine of the 11 had been convicted under the Clean Air Act for installing defeat devices that disable diesel truck emissions controls, which the EPA estimates have polluted roads with the equivalent of 9 million extra vehicles. The eleventh pardon went to Adam Kidan, a Republican donor who contributed more than $270,000 to Trump’s political committees in 2024 and co-hosted a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago just weeks before the pardon was granted. 3, 4
VP Vance Delivers America 250 Address in New York Harbor
Vice President JD Vance delivered a July 4 address from the deck of the USS Kearsarge in New York Harbor, as more than 30 tall ships from allied nations passed in review during the Sail250 International Parade. Vance urged Americans to reject what he called the ‘two-dimensional view’ of the nation held by those who focus only on its imperfections, and framed the 250th anniversary as proof of American durability. The remarks appeared to be a direct response to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s speech the previous day, in which Mamdani argued that American exceptionalism rests on its openness to change rather than its military or economic power. 5, 6
Democrats Use July 4 to Launch 2028 Positioning
Two Democratic governors widely seen as potential 2028 presidential candidates used July 4 to deliver high-profile counterpoints to President Trump’s National Mall rally. California Governor Gavin Newsom released a video speech warning that Trump represents the ‘very instincts our Founding Fathers fought against’ and announced he is working with the California Legislature on a bill that would make it a felony to seize ballots before election results are certified. Maryland Governor Wes Moore, speaking to veterans at the Maryland State House in Annapolis, drew a distinction between patriotism and nationalism, saying the country’s 250th birthday deserves more than ‘one man talking about himself.’ 7, 8

NYC’s Mamdani Delivers Rival July 4 Address on Immigration
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani delivered a 13-minute Independence Day address on Saturday, July 4, from behind George Washington’s original desk at City Hall, surrounded by a group of newly naturalized citizens. Without naming President Trump directly, Mamdani argued that America’s greatness lies in its ongoing transformation and willingness to welcome immigrants, not in its economic or military dominance. He said those who believe America ‘belongs only to those with the right accent or the right shade of skin’ are ‘small, weak, and unoriginal.’ Mamdani, a democratic socialist and naturalized citizen himself, has become an increasingly prominent Democratic voice as the party looks ahead to the 2028 presidential race. 9, 10
Moore’s July 4 Speech Ignites 2028 Speculation in Maryland
Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s ‘Work of Patriotism’ address on July 4 drew immediate national attention and renewed speculation about his presidential ambitions, which he has publicly downplayed while campaigning for his own reelection in 2026. Moore, the only Black governor in the United States and a decorated Army veteran, is scheduled to travel to Michigan on Sunday, July 5, where he will campaign for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson in Detroit, Saginaw, and Flint. Political observers noted that Michigan is a key early 2028 primary state. 8, 11
Patriot Front Marches Through DC on July 4, No Arrests Made
Roughly 400 members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front marched through Washington, D.C., on Saturday, July 4, carrying Confederate flags and chanting ‘Reclaim America.’ Metropolitan Police monitored the march and reported no arrests. The group, which researchers describe as image-conscious and focused on media exposure for recruitment purposes, has been designated a hate group by civil rights organizations. Their presence added to the political tensions surrounding a holiday that was already sharply divided between the Trump-backed National Mall rally and competing progressive demonstrations in other parts of the city. 12
