Judge Blocks DOJ From Getting 2020 Election Worker Data
A federal judge in Atlanta ruled Tuesday, July 7, that the Justice Department cannot obtain the names and personal contact information of every poll worker and county employee involved in Georgia’s 2020 Fulton County election. U.S. District Judge William Ray found the grand jury subpoena to be ‘unreasonable’ and ordered it quashed, calling it an overbroad fishing expedition. Fulton County had argued the subpoena was designed to ‘target, harass and punish’ political opponents. The ruling is a significant setback to the Trump administration’s effort to revive fraud allegations from the 2020 presidential race in Georgia. 1
Trump Renews Greenland Claim at NATO Summit in Turkey
President Trump told reporters at the NATO summit in Ankara on Tuesday, July 7, that Greenland ‘should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark,’ reviving a claim that has deeply unsettled European allies. The remarks came as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte tried to reframe the gathering as a deal-making success, with member nations announcing billions in new arms commitments. Trump also said he had not ruled out further cuts to U.S. troop levels in Europe, citing disappointment that NATO allies did not support the U.S. during the Iran conflict. 2
21 States Push Back on Trump’s Third Tariff Round
A coalition of 21 state attorneys general led by Oregon AG Dan Rayfield submitted a formal comment letter Monday, July 6, urging the U.S. Trade Representative to withdraw its latest proposed tariff plan, which would impose 10 to 12.5 percent duties on the European Union and 59 other countries. The states argue the plan, the administration’s third tariff attempt after courts struck down the first two, is illegal and unsupported by evidence. A Federal Reserve Bank of New York analysis found that nearly 90 percent of the costs from Trump’s 2025 tariffs were ultimately borne by American consumers and businesses. 3, 4
Michigan AG Blasts DOJ Election Monitoring Moves
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a sharply worded statement Monday, July 6, after the U.S. Department of Justice sent letters to the cities of Detroit, East Lansing, and Lansing announcing plans to deploy federal election monitors to those cities’ polling places during the state’s August 2026 primary. Nessel called the DOJ’s letters ‘baseless’ and ‘unsubstantiated,’ and warned that federal monitors have no authority to interfere with how Michigan administers its elections. ‘The courts have been clear time and time again: states run elections, not the federal government,’ she said. 5

Platner Still in Race as Sanders Demands Exit
The pressure on Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner reached a new level on Tuesday, July 7, as Sen. Bernie Sanders became the latest major figure to demand his withdrawal. ‘In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside,’ Sanders said in a statement, joining Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DSCC Chair Kirsten Gillibrand, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren in calling for Platner to exit. Maine’s state party executive director accused Platner’s team of trying to ‘put their thumb on the scale’ in the replacement process, even as Platner had still not withdrawn. Under Maine law, he must step down by 5 p.m. on July 13 for Democrats to place a new candidate on the ballot. 6, 7
Maryland Plans August Special Session on Redistricting
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore confirmed Tuesday, July 7, that the state legislature will hold a special session from August 3 to 5 to consider a constitutional amendment on redistricting, which would then go to voters in November. Moore said the move was necessary because core protections of the federal Voting Rights Act have been ‘gutted’ by the Supreme Court, and he warned that Maryland would ‘not be caught flat-footed.’ If three-fifths of both chambers approve the amendment, it would set new legal guardrails for how Maryland draws its congressional maps ahead of the 2028 cycle. The special session dates were confirmed by both the Senate president and House speaker. 8, 9
North Carolina Passes First Full Budget in Two Years
Gov. Josh Stein signed North Carolina’s first complete state budget in more than two years into law on Tuesday, July 7, ending a prolonged standoff between the Democratic governor and the Republican-controlled legislature. The budget, Senate Bill 257, includes what the governor described as historic pay raises for teachers and law enforcement officers statewide. The two-year budget impasse had left state agencies operating under temporary funding measures and created uncertainty for school districts and public safety departments trying to plan ahead. 10
