U.S. Lifts Iran Oil Sanctions Under 60-Day Peace Deal
On Monday, June 22, the U.S. Treasury issued a 60-day general license allowing the production, delivery, and sale of Iranian crude oil, petrochemicals, and petroleum products, effective through August 21. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the move following what he described as “constructive” talks in Switzerland. The waiver fulfills an early financial incentive under the memorandum of understanding signed by both nations on June 17. 1, 2, 3
Congress Questions Whether Iran War Was Worth the Cost
Congress returned to Washington on Monday, June 22, and lawmakers from both parties openly questioned President Trump’s nearly four-month war with Iran. The conflict was never formally authorized by Congress. Senate Democrats were particularly pointed in their criticism, with Senator Chris Coons calling the deal “pathetic” and Senator Cory Booker comparing Trump to an arsonist taking credit for leaving a burning building. 4, 5
Federal Judge Quashes DOJ Subpoenas Against Minnesota Officials
A federal judge on Monday, June 22, struck down six Justice Department grand jury subpoenas targeting Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, ruling them unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz, a Republican appointee, found the subpoenas were “issued for unlawful reasons” and were designed to harass and retaliate against officials who criticized Trump administration immigration enforcement operations earlier this year. 6, 7
Judge Blocks Trump’s Voter Database Using Social Security Records
A federal judge on Monday, June 22, blocked the Trump administration from using a modified immigration database that cross-references Social Security records with citizenship data to remove voters from registration rolls. U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan ruled that states had already used inaccurate data from the system to wrongly label American citizens as non-citizens, causing some to have their voter registrations canceled ahead of November’s midterms. 8, 9
ODNI Mass Firings Begin Under Acting Spy Chief Pulte
Large-scale layoffs at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence began on Monday, June 22, just days after Bill Pulte, a Trump loyalist with no intelligence background, was named acting director. CNN reported that it was not yet clear which positions were being eliminated. Top Democrats on the House and Senate intelligence committees warned Pulte that using a temporary appointment to make sweeping personnel cuts could risk national security. 10, 11
AP: DEA Allowed 1.8 Million Fentanyl Pills to Hit the Streets
An Associated Press investigation published Monday, June 22, found that the Drug Enforcement Administration knowingly allowed hundreds of thousands of fentanyl pills to reach New Mexico streets between 2023 and 2025 while pursuing larger trafficking networks. A DEA whistleblower said agents on one case permitted the delivery of at least 1.8 million pills without seizure. New Mexico saw a 21 percent rise in overdose deaths last year even as the national rate fell 14 percent. 12, 13

Florida’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Ordered to Fully Demobilize
Florida’s controversial Everglades immigration detention center, widely known as ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’ was ordered to begin full demobilization on Monday, June 22, CBS News reported. The last detainees had departed the 3,000-bed facility in recent weeks, and operators were notified Monday morning to begin shutdown. Officials cited hurricane season safety concerns. The facility cost an estimated $1.2 billion and had been championed by Governor Ron DeSantis and President Trump as a model for other states. 16, 17
