Trump Election Speech Revives 2020 Claims, No New Proof
President Trump delivered a 25-minute primetime address from the White House on Thursday night, declassifying intelligence documents he said exposed “shocking vulnerabilities” in American election systems. Trump alleged China acquired 220 million voter files and renewed unproven claims that the 2020 election was compromised, though the released documents did not support his broader assertions. Intelligence experts and Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Mark Warner, said no evidence has emerged that any vote count was altered. Trump used the address to press Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, a stalled voter ID bill. 1, 2, 3
Speaker Johnson Yanks Veterans Bill Amid GOP Revolt
House Speaker Mike Johnson pulled a major veterans benefits bill from the floor Thursday just minutes before a scheduled vote after more than a half-dozen Republican holdouts objected to proposed cuts affecting sleep apnea and tinnitus benefits. The setback marked another setback for Johnson’s legislative agenda amid rising anxiety within his party ahead of the November midterms. The bill’s failure leaves veterans’ groups and GOP leadership searching for a path forward before the House recesses. 4, 5
Blanche Meets Epstein Survivors; Confirmation Vote Still Unclear
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche held a tense hour-long meeting Thursday with survivors of Jeffrey Epstein as he seeks to secure Senate votes for his confirmation as attorney general. Survivors, including Virginia Giuffre’s family, said Blanche made no firm commitments and described the meeting as disappointing. Republican Senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn, whose votes are pivotal on the Judiciary Committee, have not said how they will vote following the session. 6
DOJ Sues Maryland Over In-State Tuition for Immigrants
The Justice Department filed suit against Maryland on Thursday, arguing that a state law granting in-state tuition and financial aid to immigrants without legal status discriminates against U.S. citizens living out of state. Officials said the policy costs Maryland taxpayers roughly $9 million a year and marks the 13th such lawsuit filed nationwide. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown vowed to fight the suit in court, saying the state will continue supporting students who grew up there. 7
Fetterman Draws Israel ‘Red Line’ for Democratic Party
Senator John Fetterman said Thursday he would leave the Democratic Party if it formally adopted an anti-Israel position, calling it his personal “red line.” The comment followed a Wednesday House vote in which 103 Democrats, nearly half the caucus, backed a failed measure to cut $3.3 billion in military and humanitarian aid to Israel. The vote exposed a widening rift among Democrats, splitting party leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Katherine Clark. 8, 9

Newsom Signs Water and Wildfire Bond Bill Package
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a series of bills Thursday, including AB 35, a bond measure directing funding toward safe drinking water, wildfire prevention, drought preparedness, and clean air programs. The signing continues Newsom’s push on infrastructure and climate resilience measures as he weighs a potential future run for national office. 10
States Sue to Block $110 Billion Paramount-Warner Deal
Twelve Democratic state attorneys general filed suit Thursday in federal court in California seeking to block Paramount Skydance’s proposed $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The move comes despite the Justice Department declining to challenge the merger, highlighting a growing trend of state officials stepping in as independent antitrust enforcers when federal regulators decline to act. 11
