Georgia Sends Split Verdict on Trump’s Endorsements
Republican voters on Tuesday, June 16, delivered a mixed outcome for President Trump’s endorsed candidates in Georgia’s primary runoffs. Trump-backed Rep. Mike Collins defeated former football coach Derek Dooley to win the Republican Senate nomination, setting up a high-stakes November contest against Democratic incumbent Sen. Jon Ossoff. However, billionaire healthcare executive Rick Jackson defeated Trump-backed Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in the gubernatorial runoff, spending over $100 million of his own money to overcome both the president’s and Gov. Brian Kemp’s endorsements. 1, 2, 3
Senate Advances Major Bipartisan Housing Bill
The Senate voted 87-8 on Tuesday, June 16, to advance the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act after House and Senate leaders reached a bicameral agreement on the legislation. The bill restricts large institutional investors from purchasing more than 350 single-family homes, a provision President Trump had championed since the beginning of the year. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the chamber could pass the bill as soon as this week, with the House expected to take it up when it returns from recess next week. 4, 5
Jay Clayton Faces Senate at DNI Confirmation Hearing
Jay Clayton, President Trump’s nominee to serve as Director of National Intelligence, appears before the Senate Intelligence Committee today, June 17, at 2 p.m. EDT. Clayton, a former SEC chairman who most recently served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, was nominated after significant congressional pushback over Trump’s decision to install Bill Pulte, a housing finance official with no intelligence background, as acting DNI. Senate leaders have indicated a full floor vote could come as soon as Thursday. 6, 7
DOJ Charges 15 with Blocking Minneapolis Immigration Raids
Federal prosecutors in Minnesota announced charges on Tuesday, June 16, against 15 individuals affiliated with two Minneapolis-based activist groups, accusing them of conspiring to obstruct ICE immigration enforcement operations earlier this year. Twelve were arrested Tuesday morning; two remain at large. U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen described the defendants as members of antifa-aligned groups who surveilled federal agents, threw ice blocks at their vehicles, and set up blockades around federal buildings. Each defendant faces a maximum of six years for the lead charge. 8, 9
DOJ Sues Chicago Suburb Over Reparations Program
The Justice Department on Tuesday, June 16, moved to join a federal lawsuit challenging Evanston, Illinois’s first-in-the-nation reparations program, which has paid $25,000 each to Black residents and their descendants who lived in the city between 1919 and 1969. The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division argued the program constitutes illegal racial discrimination under the 14th Amendment and the Fair Housing Act. Evanston had refused to cooperate with a federal investigation into the program earlier this year. 10, 11

Georgia Redistricting Special Session Opens Today
Georgia’s General Assembly convenes today, June 17, for a special session called by Gov. Brian Kemp to redraw the state’s congressional and legislative district maps ahead of the 2028 election cycle. The session follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s April ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which weakened Voting Rights Act protections and opened the door for states to redraw maps without strict consideration of race. Republicans are expected to move quickly; any redrawn lines would not affect the current 2026 midterm races. 12, 13
Lewis George Takes Commanding Lead in DC Mayor Race
D.C. Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, a self-described democratic socialist, opened a commanding lead in Washington, D.C.’s Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday, June 16, capturing more than 52% of first-choice votes to former Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie’s 37%, with roughly 95,000 ballots counted. The race marks D.C.’s first use of ranked-choice voting, and certified results are not expected until later in June. Lewis George is heavily favored in November’s general election in the solidly Democratic city, and President Trump has threatened to increase federal oversight of D.C. if she wins. 14, 15, 16
Alabama Senate Runoff: Trump Endorsee Barry Moore Wins
Rep. Barry Moore, backed by President Trump, won Alabama’s Republican Senate primary runoff on Tuesday, June 16, to fill the seat being vacated by Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor. Moore defeated combat veteran Jared Hudson, extending Trump’s winning streak in deep-red Senate races on an otherwise split primary night. Moore is heavily favored in November in Alabama. 17, 18
