Senate Rebukes Trump With Bipartisan Iran War Powers Vote
The Senate on Tuesday, June 23, approved a House-passed war powers resolution 50 to 48, directing President Trump to withdraw U.S. armed forces from hostilities against Iran. Four Republican senators crossed party lines to vote yes: Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Rand Paul of Kentucky. Democrat John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the lone member of his party to vote against it. The resolution is symbolic and does not carry the force of law, and the White House said it has “no significance.” 1, 2, 3
Trump Admits Calling U.S. Attorney to Probe California Vote
At a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, June 23, President Trump publicly acknowledged that he personally called a federal prosecutor in California to request an investigation into the state’s primary election results. Trump said the call came as his preferred candidate, Steve Hilton, was trailing in early returns. Democracy Docket called the admission “the clearest evidence yet of Trump’s weaponization of the department to interfere in elections.” California officials have rejected Trump’s fraud claims as baseless. 4, 5
Pentagon Asks Congress for $80 Billion More for Iran War
The Pentagon formally told lawmakers on Tuesday, June 23, that it needs approximately $80 billion to cover the costs of the Iran war and other military expenses. Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg delivered the request, warning that the Pentagon could run out of funding for operations this summer without congressional action. The figure is far higher than the estimate provided to lawmakers the prior month and comes as Congress is already considering President Trump’s record-breaking $1.5 trillion defense budget proposal. 6, 7
Iran Disputes Vance’s Claim on UN Nuclear Inspections
Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, June 23, directly contradicted Vice President JD Vance’s public statement that Tehran had agreed to allow United Nations nuclear inspectors back into the country as part of the peace roadmap. Iranian officials said there are “no plans for IAEA inspections” and that the country’s central bank governor also rebutted President Trump’s claim that Iran agreed to use sanctions relief funds exclusively to purchase U.S. agricultural products. The contradictions surfaced as both sides work toward a final deal within 60 days. 8, 9
Trump and Senate GOP Set for Collision Today Over SAVE Act
President Trump is set to meet with the Senate Republican steering committee on Wednesday, June 25, at the Capitol to confront two significant sources of tension: the SAVE America Act voter ID bill and the Iran peace deal. The Hill reported on Tuesday that Trump has been pressuring Republican senators to end the Democratic filibuster on the SAVE Act by eliminating the 60-vote threshold. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has been placed in the uncomfortable position of repeatedly having to deliver news to the president that he does not want to hear. 10, 11

Wilson Defeats Trump-Backed Evette in SC Governor Runoff
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson defeated Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette in Tuesday’s Republican gubernatorial runoff, winning with approximately 65 percent of the vote. The outcome was a setback for President Trump, who had originally backed Evette exclusively before hedging by endorsing both candidates in the final days. Wilson will face Democratic state Representative Jermaine Johnson in November. Wilson’s strong margin signaled that even in a deeply Republican state, Trump’s endorsement is no longer a guarantee of victory. 12, 13
Mamdani-Backed Progressives Sweep NYC Congressional Primaries
Three progressive candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won their Democratic congressional primary races on Tuesday, June 23, including two who unseated sitting incumbents. The victories were a major setback for the Democratic Party establishment and for AIPAC’s United Democracy Project, which had invested heavily in the incumbents. The results elevated the influence of the Democratic Socialists of America in New York politics and signaled a potential leftward shift in the city’s congressional delegation ahead of November’s midterms. 14, 15
