Platner Suspends Maine Senate Campaign After Assault Allegation
Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner announced Wednesday, July 8, that he is suspending his campaign and will file to withdraw from the ballot, stating he lost the financial backing needed to continue after a woman accused him of sexual assault in 2021. Platner denied the allegation, calling it “categorically false,” but said the Democratic establishment had cut him off. He has until 5 p.m. on July 13 to formally file his withdrawal, which gives the Maine Democratic Party until July 27 to name a replacement in this pivotal race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins. 1, 2
Trump Declares Iran Ceasefire “Over” After New U.S. Strikes
President Trump declared the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding effectively finished on Wednesday, July 8, telling reporters in Ankara, “As far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” just hours after U.S. forces struck more than 80 Iranian military targets in retaliation for Iran’s attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps responded by targeting U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait, and Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes as a “flagrant violation” of the ceasefire agreement. Trump said the U.S. was preparing to strike again that evening, while leaving open a slim possibility that diplomats could continue talking. 3, 4
NATO Summit Closes With Ukraine Patriot Deal; Trump Cites “Unity”
The NATO summit in Ankara concluded Wednesday, July 8, with President Trump declaring there was “a lot of love” in the room, as the 32 member nations reaffirmed their Article 5 collective defense commitment in a formal summit declaration. The summit’s signature announcement was Trump’s agreement to give Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot air defense systems, a significant breakthrough for Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who has pressed the administration for months on the global shortage of missile interceptors. NATO allies also pledged 70 billion euros in combined military support for Ukraine in 2026 and 2027, with the U.S. not participating given its earlier decision to pause direct funding. 5, 6
Trump Orders All U.S. Trade With Spain Cut Off at NATO
President Trump on Wednesday, July 8, ordered an immediate halt to all trade with NATO ally Spain during the Ankara summit, calling the country “a wasted cause” and “a terrible partner in NATO.” Trump has repeatedly criticized Spain for blocking U.S. military aircraft from using its bases during the Iran war and for falling short on defense spending targets. European Union rules require trade negotiations to be conducted by the bloc as a whole, meaning Trump’s unilateral order faces significant legal hurdles, and EU officials warned it could trigger a broader trans-Atlantic trade conflict. Spanish financial markets fell sharply on the news. 7, 8
Trump Offers Turkey F-35 Access, Lifts Longstanding Sanctions
President Trump announced Tuesday, July 7, on the sidelines of the NATO summit that the United States will lift sanctions imposed on Turkey under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, which had penalized Ankara for purchasing Russia’s S-400 missile defense system in 2019. Trump also said he was open to restoring Turkey’s access to the F-35 fighter jet program, from which it was removed in 2020. The announcements were welcomed by Turkish President Erdogan, but are expected to face strong pushback from members of Congress, particularly given Israel’s long-standing objections to Turkey acquiring advanced American fighter jets. 9, 10

Virginia Gov. Spanberger Fights Federal Medicaid Cuts
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger on Tuesday, July 7, hosted a roundtable with health plans, hospitals, and providers to address what she described as the devastating impact of President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill on Virginia’s healthcare system. The law is projected to cut federal Medicaid funding to Virginia by an estimated $1.8 to $2.6 billion per year beginning in 2028, potentially leaving more than 550,000 Virginians without coverage. Spanberger announced that Virginia’s new two-year budget includes $1 billion in state funds to blunt the federal cuts, including a $350 million Medicaid Reserve Fund and $150 million for a new premium assistance program for residents who may lose affordable coverage. 11
Michigan’s GOP Governor Race Heats Up in Fiery TV Debate
The three Republican candidates vying to succeed term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer squared off Wednesday, July 8, in their first shared debate, broadcast live on Fox 2 Detroit, less than a month before Michigan’s August 4 primary. U.S. Rep. John James, who holds a double-digit lead in polls and carries President Trump’s endorsement, faced sustained attacks from former state Attorney General Mike Cox, who accused James of hypocrisy for doing business with China while criticizing it on the campaign trail. Businessman Perry Johnson also went on the offensive as all three candidates competed on pledges to eliminate Michigan’s state income tax. The Democratic primary features Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson as the frontrunner. 12, 13
