Platner Accused of Assault; Democrats Demand He Exit
Politico reported Monday, July 6, that a Maine woman named Jenny Racicot accused Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner of sexual assault in 2021, saying he entered her home while intoxicated and forced her to have sex despite her repeated objections. Platner denied the allegation but posted a video saying he was ‘taking the time to reflect on the best path forward.’ Within hours, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, DSCC Chair Kirsten Gillibrand, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren all withdrew their endorsements and called on Platner to exit the race. The DSCC went further, stating it would invest no money in Maine if Platner remains on the ballot. Under state law, Platner must withdraw by July 13 for Maine Democrats to nominate a replacement. 1, 2
Trump Departs for NATO Summit Amid Growing Tensions
President Trump departed Monday, July 6, for the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, carrying with him deep frustration over what he describes as allies’ failure to support the U.S. in its military operation in Iran. As he left the White House, Trump told reporters he believes the Ukraine war could end soon, saying ‘President Putin wants it to end’ and ‘I think we’re going to get it ended.’ NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has worked to temper tensions ahead of the summit, pointing to a 20 percent increase in European defense spending and crediting Trump’s pressure for the gains. The summit is also expected to address a Pentagon review that could significantly reduce U.S. troop levels across Europe. 3, 4
White House Targets Smithsonian as Politically Extreme
The White House released a 162-page report on Monday, July 6, accusing the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History of ‘extreme political activism’ and charging that the museum no longer presents American history as ‘a shared national inheritance.’ The report, written by the Domestic Policy Council and stemming from a March 2025 executive order, threatens the museum’s federal funding and calls for major reforms. The Smithsonian responded firmly, stating it has served the American public with ‘nonpartisan and independent scholarship’ for more than 180 years. Historians from the American Historical Association pushed back the same day, saying the report’s core complaint is simply that the museum is ‘not celebratory enough.’ 5, 6
22 Democratic AGs Oppose New Trump Tariffs
A group of 22 Democratic state attorneys general filed a formal opposition on Monday, July 6, to the Trump administration’s proposed tariffs of up to 12.5 percent on 59 countries and the European Union over allegations they failed to ban goods made with forced labor. The AGs argue the tariffs would raise costs for American consumers without meaningfully addressing the underlying labor abuses. Public hearings on the proposed measures are scheduled to begin in Washington today, July 7, giving opponents their first formal opportunity to press their case before the administration issues a final ruling. 7, 8

Hochul Goes on Offense in Blakeman’s Backyard
Governor Kathy Hochul launched an aggressive campaign push into Long Island on Monday, July 6, targeting Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman on his home turf. A new Siena Research Institute poll shows Hochul leading Blakeman by 20 points statewide, yet Blakeman holds only a razor-thin 5-point edge in Nassau County, his own base. Political analyst Larry Levy of Hofstra University told Politico the Nassau numbers were ‘devastating news for Blakeman,’ noting that a candidate cannot afford to be nearly even at home against a better-funded incumbent with political momentum. 9
NY Conservative Party Steps Aside in Stefanik’s Old Seat
New York’s Conservative Party will not field a candidate in November in the race to succeed Rep. Elise Stefanik, state Conservative Party Chair Jerry Kassar confirmed Monday, July 6. The party’s favored candidate, Assemblymember Robert Smullen, dropped out after losing the Republican primary to Sticker Mule CEO Anthony Constantino following a meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office. Republicans are relieved to avoid a repeat of 2009, when a three-way race handed that deep-red district to a Democrat. Kassar is still separately suing Constantino for defamation over statements made during the primary. 9
New York Prison Deaths Prompt Reform Push
Key New York Democratic lawmakers announced plans on Monday, July 6, to pursue new prison reform legislation following the release of independent findings into the deaths of two inmates at state facilities. A review by law firm WilmerHale cited understaffing, low morale, and unresolved trauma among correctional officers as contributing factors in the deaths of Robert Brooks and Messiah Nantwi. State Sen. Julia Salazar and Assemblymember Michaelle Solages called the findings ‘a call to action,’ pledging to advance long-stalled bills on parole reform when the Legislature returns for its next session. 9
