Supreme Court Rejects Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Order 6-3
The Supreme Court delivered a sharp rebuke to President Trump on Tuesday, June 30, ruling 6-3 that the Constitution’s 14th Amendment guarantees automatic citizenship to virtually all children born in the United States. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority and joined by two fellow conservative justices and all three liberals, said there was “scant evidence” for the administration’s effort to reinterpret 128 years of legal precedent. Trump called the ruling “too bad for our country” and urged Congress to pass legislation to restrict birthright citizenship.1, 2
Supreme Court Eliminates Watergate-Era Campaign Spending Limits
Also on Tuesday, June 30, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 along ideological lines to strike down a 1974 law that had capped how much political parties could spend in coordination with their own candidates for federal office. The ruling immediately advantages Republicans, whose party committees entered the midterm cycle with far more cash on hand than their Democratic counterparts. The decision overturned a 2001 Supreme Court precedent and is expected to reshape political advertising ahead of the November midterm elections.3, 4
House GOP Deadlocks, Sends Members Home Early Before July 4th
Speaker Mike Johnson abruptly canceled all scheduled votes on Tuesday, June 30, and sent House members home days early for the July 4th recess, after Republicans failed to reach agreement on a path forward for President Trump’s priorities. Trump has continued to insist that Congress pass the SAVE Act, his sweeping voter-ID and citizenship-verification bill, before he signs any other major legislation, including the bipartisan housing affordability bill. The stalemate leaves several key agenda items unresolved and deepens the visible divide between Trump and House leadership.5, 6
500,000 New Yorkers Lose Health Coverage Today Under HR-1
As of today, July 1, nearly 500,000 moderate-income New Yorkers will lose their health insurance coverage under New York State’s Essential Plan, a direct result of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed by President Trump last July 4. The federal law eliminated premium tax credit eligibility for a broad group of lawfully present immigrants, effectively defunding the program. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has called the cuts “devastating” and the state is scrambling to find alternative coverage solutions for the affected population.7, 8
Trump Freezes Medicaid Fraud Funds in New York, Sparking Lawsuit
The Trump administration suspended federal funding for New York State’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit on Monday, June 30, citing what it called insufficient enforcement results. New York officials immediately disputed the characterization, arguing the unit has recovered billions of dollars and that the action is politically motivated. The state has announced plans to file a legal challenge. The move comes as New York is simultaneously grappling with the broader health coverage losses that took effect today under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.9, 10

Weiser Upsets Bennet in Colorado Democratic Governor Primary
Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser defeated U.S. Senator Michael Bennet in Tuesday’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, framing himself as the stronger fighter against President Trump and the stronger voice for working Coloradans. Weiser had won 90 percent of Democratic Party delegates at the March state assembly. Bennet is a two-term senator and former presidential candidate. The Republican gubernatorial primary, between state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer and pastor Victor Marx, remains too close to call.11, 12
Progressive Kiros Topples 15-Term Denver Congresswoman; Hickenlooper Holds
Colorado’s June 30 primary also delivered a major upset in Denver, where 29-year-old democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated 15-term incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in the heavily Democratic 1st Congressional District. The victory continued a national pattern of younger, left-leaning challengers ousting long-serving Democratic incumbents. In the U.S. Senate race, Sen. John Hickenlooper fended off a primary challenge from progressive state Sen. Julie Gonzales, surviving what had tightened to a single-digit race in recent polling.13, 14
