Appeals Court Blocks Trump Mail Voting Order
A federal appeals court in Boston ruled Saturday that the Trump administration cannot enforce a March executive order restricting mail-in voting in 23 states and the District of Columbia. The three-judge panel voted 2-1 to keep in place a lower court block on a rule that would have required the Postal Service to withhold mail ballots from states that refuse to share unredacted voter data with the Department of Homeland Security. The court found the order intrudes on states’ constitutional authority to run their own elections. 1, 2
Maine Democrats Pick Troy Jackson for Senate
Maine Democrats selected former state Senate President Troy Jackson as their new U.S. Senate nominee Saturday, replacing Graham Platner, who withdrew earlier this month following a rape allegation he denies. Jackson, a logger from northern Maine, won nearly unanimously at a special party convention in Bangor and will now face five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins in November. The race is considered pivotal to Democrats’ hopes of retaking Senate control. 3, 4
Trump Threatens EU Tariffs Over Google Fine
President Trump said Friday he will pursue a new trade investigation and “substantial” tariffs against the European Union after Brussels fined Google roughly $1 billion for antitrust violations. Trump called the penalty “illegal and highly unethical” and warned it could jeopardize the trade agreement he reached with the EU last year that caps tariffs on European exports at 15 percent. The dispute adds fresh strain to U.S.-EU trade relations just as a broader tariff truce was taking hold. 5
24 States Sue Over Disaster Grant Conditions
A coalition of 24 state attorneys general and two governors, co-led by California, Illinois, New Jersey and Rhode Island, filed suit Thursday challenging new federal conditions on disaster and counterterrorism grants. The complaint argues that Homeland Security’s requirements, including voter citizenship verification and cooperation with immigration enforcement, exceed federal authority and violate the Constitution’s Spending Clause. More than $740 million in fiscal year 2026 grant funding is at stake for the plaintiff states. 6
Trump Vows Fourth Term Bid at Correspondents Dinner
President Trump used his speech at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner Friday night to condemn the political violence that postponed the event in April, then jokingly announced his intention to seek a fourth presidential term, which the Constitution prohibits. Trump also criticized several reporters by name and defended his administration’s economic and foreign policy record. The dinner marked his first appearance at the annual event since taking office this term. 11

Hawaii Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke Indicted on Bribery
An Oahu grand jury indicted Hawaii Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke on Friday on charges including criminal conspiracy to commit bribery and falsifying candidate committee reports, one of five people charged in a long-running corruption investigation. Governor Josh Green called on Luke, a fellow Democrat, to resign so the state government can move forward. Luke has acknowledged receiving payments at the center of the case but says they did not influence her official actions. 7, 8
Oklahoma Governor Hopefuls Clash Over Trump-Backed Smelter
The three leading candidates for Oklahoma governor met Saturday at a Tulsa cattlemen’s forum, their first joint appearance since the June primary. Attorney General Gentner Drummond and rival Republican Mike Mazzei sparred over a Trump-backed foreign-owned aluminum smelter project in Inola, with Drummond warning it would pollute the region and Mazzei touting its promised 10,000 jobs. Democratic nominee Cyndi Munson used the forum to criticize Governor Kevin Stitt’s handling of the state forestry agency and private school tax credits. 9
Michigan Early Voting Opens Amid Federal Election Fight
Michigan opened its first weekend of statewide early in-person voting Saturday ahead of the state’s August 4 primary, with roughly 10 percent of registered voters already casting ballots on day one. The launch came as Attorney General Dana Nessel welcomed the federal appeals court ruling blocking Trump’s mail-voting order, calling repeated administration efforts to control state election systems a violation of the separation of powers. Michigan is one of more than two dozen states that sued the administration this month over funding conditions tied to election policy. 10, 1
