Administration Freezes Green Cards for Tech Firms
On Thursday, the Trump administration suspended Microsoft, Adobe and six major information technology outsourcing companies from the permanent labor certification program used for employment-based green cards. Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling said officials would stop accepting new applications and processing pending cases involving the companies. Vice President JD Vance said the suspensions would remain until hiring practices change. Microsoft said most of its recent H-1B applications involved existing employees and that comparable workers receive equal pay. The administration also opened investigations into nine universities, including Harvard, Yale and Stanford, over alleged misuse of exchange-visitor visas and federally funded research.1, 2
Judge Extends News Outlets’ White House Access
On Thursday, a federal judge extended through Tuesday an order requiring the White House to admit CNN, MS NOW and Politico while he considers longer-term relief. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly questioned the administration’s explanation for excluding the outlets and said the government’s defense faced an uphill climb. Justice Department lawyers argued that the president may control access and cited national security and allegedly false reporting. The outlets said the ban punished protected journalism and was imposed without adequate notice. Kelly had previously found that the outlets were likely denied fair treatment when President Trump revoked their access in September.3, 4
Michigan Senate Rivals Clash in First Debate
On Thursday night, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers met in their first Michigan Senate debate and argued over tariffs, health care, immigration and foreign policy. Both candidates supported pausing the federal gasoline tax and questioned the trade dispute with Canada. Rogers said the Iran war should end and defended support for Israel, while El-Sayed opposed American military aid to Israel and criticized the administration’s handling of Iran. Rogers challenged El-Sayed’s Medicare for All plan, while El-Sayed pressed Rogers over his ties to President Trump. The candidates repeatedly interrupted each other during the hourlong debate in Grand Rapids.5, 6
Georgia Senate Candidates Trade Attacks in Debate
On Thursday night, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff and Republican Representative Mike Collins met in their first Georgia Senate debate, arguing over inflation, tariffs, health care and political associations. Ossoff blamed President Trump’s tariffs and policies for higher costs and criticized Collins’s support for the administration’s tax and spending law. Collins blamed former President Joe Biden’s policies for inflation and said the Republican law would help the economy. Ossoff accused Collins of ties to people who expressed white nationalist views. Collins said he had condemned racism and antisemitism and described Ossoff as politically out of step with Georgia voters. Another debate is scheduled Tuesday.7, 8
Arizona Candidate Discusses Reported Sexual Assault
On Thursday, Arizona congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia said she decided to publicly discuss her reported rape to advocate for sexual assault survivors. The Democrat, who is challenging Republican Representative Abe Hamadeh in the 8th District, told ABC News that remaining silent felt inconsistent with her campaign pledge to fight for constituents. She said the August attack may have been a crime of opportunity, though she believed the assailants recognized her. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed an ongoing investigation. Greene-Placentia also told The Arizona Republic that doorbell video supports portions of her account, and she appreciated Hamadeh’s call for a thorough investigation.9, 10

Maine Governor Candidates Debate Housing Costs
On Thursday night, Maine gubernatorial candidates Hannah Pingree, Bobby Charles and Rick Bennett debated housing, immigration, health care and state spending in Bangor. All three said housing construction is too slow and suggested that easing or improving permitting could help address the state’s housing shortage. Pingree proposed a 90-day limit for environmental permits, Charles urged towns to accelerate approvals, and Bennett called for an audit of delays. Charles and Bennett supported higher health care reimbursement rates, while Pingree and Bennett favored movement toward universal coverage. Bennett, an independent, criticized both major parties and portrayed himself as the middle choice.11
Michigan Election Candidates Debate Voting Trust
On Thursday evening, Michigan secretary of state candidates Garlin Gilchrist and Anthony Forlini debated election administration, campaign-finance disclosure, voter data and customer service. Gilchrist, the Democratic lieutenant governor, accused Forlini of accommodating election deniers and said his software background would help protect voter information. Forlini, the Republican Macomb County clerk, emphasized his experience running elections and said Gilchrist had questioned a 2017 Detroit clerk election that he lost. Gilchrist sought a recount in that contest, which confirmed his defeat. The candidates are seeking to replace term-limited Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who is running for governor.12, 13
Obama Endorses Crowley in Wisconsin Governor Race
On Thursday, former President Barack Obama endorsed Democratic nominee David Crowley for Wisconsin governor in a video released less than four weeks before the election. Obama cited Crowley’s record as Milwaukee County executive, including job creation and a balanced budget, and said Crowley would work to make the state more affordable. Crowley said he was honored by the endorsement and thanked Obama for his support. Crowley faces Republican Representative Tom Tiffany in the November 3 general election. The endorsement gives the Democratic candidate support from a former president who carried Wisconsin twice and remains an influential figure within his party.14, 15
