Trump Calls for Replacement of Ukrainian President
On Saturday, President Donald Trump said Ukraine should replace President Volodymyr Zelensky, arguing that Zelensky had failed to reach an agreement ending Russia’s invasion. Trump spoke to reporters while leaving the White House for a campaign trip to Tennessee and also criticized Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. He linked those attacks to high diesel prices affecting American farmers and ranchers. Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andriy Sybiga, responded that Zelensky retained the support of the Ukrainian people and that Ukrainians had the right to choose their leader. The exchange followed Zelensky’s criticism of Friday’s U.S.-Russia diesel agreement. 1, 2
Trump Reconsiders Planned Military Execution Broadcast
On Saturday, President Donald Trump said he had not made a final decision on whether the military should livestream the December execution of former Army Major Nidal Hasan. Trump told reporters that public viewing might deter others, but said he would make the ultimate decision. His statement came one day after he said he had “absolutely” approved the livestream plan announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Republican lawmakers, including Representatives Austin Scott, Rob Bresnahan and Tom Barrett, urged the administration to reconsider broadcasting the execution. Hasan was sentenced to death for killing 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009. 3, 4
Trump Invites Fetterman to Join Republicans
On Saturday, President Donald Trump publicly encouraged Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania to join the Republican Party. Speaking to reporters, Trump said he would welcome Fetterman and called him “a great guy.” The invitation followed Fetterman’s recent video appearance at the Republican midterm convention, where he described himself as a “common-sense Democrat,” praised Republican Senator Dave McCormick and pledged to work with Trump on steel policy. Fetterman has repeatedly rejected speculation that he will change parties. He has said his positions on labor unions, abortion rights and LGBTQ rights remain incompatible with the Republican Party, despite his breaks with Democrats on several national issues. 5, 6
Trump Campaigns for Tennessee Republican Ticket
On Saturday, President Donald Trump campaigned in Clarksville, Tennessee, and urged voters to support Republican candidates in the November midterm election. Trump spoke for nearly two hours at F&M Bank Arena after arriving through Fort Campbell. Senators Bill Hagerty and Marsha Blackburn, Representatives Tim Burchett and Matt Van Epps, and congressional candidate Charlie Hatcher also appeared. Trump invited several candidates onto the stage and asked supporters to vote. Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton separately promoted Amendment 1, which would expand when courts may hold defendants without bail before trial. The Tennessee Democratic Party criticized Republicans on costs, health care and veterans’ benefits. 7
Sanders Rallies Maine Voters Behind Jackson
On Saturday, Senator Bernie Sanders rallied more than 600 people in Bangor, Maine, for Democratic Senate nominee Troy Jackson. Sanders said electing Jackson could help Democrats regain control of the Senate, while Jackson argued that government should serve ordinary people rather than wealthy donors and corporations. Jackson also renewed his support for Medicare for All. The event was the first of three weekend appearances planned by Sanders and Jackson. Jackson, a former Maine Senate president, is challenging Republican Senator Susan Collins in a contest that could help determine Senate control. Former President Barack Obama endorsed Jackson on Thursday, adding another national figure to the campaign. 8

Clinton Campaigns With Nebraska Democratic Ticket
On Saturday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared in Omaha to support Nebraska Democrats in the midterm election. The event, called Pumpkins, Pies, and Politics, was organized to mobilize voters and included support for gubernatorial nominee Lynne Walz and congressional candidate Denise Powell. Clinton told Democrats they could help repair what she described as having been deliberately broken and offered advice about reaching voters who feel excluded from politics. Her appearance followed President Trump’s Nebraska rally earlier in the week for Governor Jim Pillen, Senator Pete Ricketts, Representative Mike Flood and Representative Adrian Smith. Both parties are using national figures to energize their state tickets. 9, 10
Iowa Governor Candidate Lahn Stresses Local Values
On Saturday, Republican candidate for governor Zach Lahn drew more than 100 people to a campaign gathering in Marion, Iowa. Lahn said protecting Iowa’s culture was a top priority and called for safe communities, strong schools, active churches and more decision-making at the local level. Attendees interviewed by KCRG emphasized conservative values, while one supporter said he previously voted for Democratic nominee Rob Sand but now backed Lahn. Sand is also campaigning ahead of the November election. KCRG reported that Sand planned Monday appearances with small business owners in Dubuque, students at the University of Northern Iowa and supporters in Cedar Rapids. 11
Rural Vermonters Rally for Statehouse Influence
On Saturday, hundreds of rural Vermont residents gathered at the Statehouse in Montpelier to seek greater influence over state policy. Rural Vermont Rising organized the event and urged participants to consider rural issues when voting in November, while declining to endorse individual candidates. The group formed after lawmakers passed Act 181, which encouraged development in cities while tightening conservation rules affecting rural land. Governor Phil Scott vetoed that law, but lawmakers overrode him. Organizers said their priorities include working-land rights, opportunities for young residents and consultation with rural communities. The group plans to pursue further land-use changes when the Legislature returns. 12
