Trump Signs Stopgap Government Funding Bill

Judge Blocks Trump’s New Citizenship Order

New Jersey Asks Supreme Court To Curb Betting Sites
On Wednesday, New Jersey asked the Supreme Court to shut down prediction market platforms operating in the state, setting up a landmark case over how such contracts are regulated. The filing follows a split among federal appeals courts, after the Third Circuit ruled prediction markets differ legally from sports betting while the Ninth Circuit found they function the same way. New Jersey officials argue state gambling law should apply to the platforms, which let users trade contracts tied to real-world events. Missouri Court Presses State On Map Referendum
On Wednesday, the Missouri Supreme Court heard arguments over whether voters can decide the fate of the state’s Republican-drawn congressional map in a November referendum. Judges pressed attorneys for Secretary of State Denny Hoskins to explain why a proposed public vote on the map should not appear on the ballot. The case centers on whether a constitutional ban on redistricting referendums applies to congressional districts or only to state legislative ones. The group People Not Politicians gathered signatures seeking the referendum after lawmakers passed the map during a 2025 special legislative session. Florida Democrats Call For Uthmeier Impeachment
On Wednesday, House Democrats in Florida called for the impeachment of Attorney General James Uthmeier after a leaked grand jury report found that money tied to a Medicaid settlement was misappropriated. The report examined a $10 million settlement over Medicaid overpayments that lawmakers say was routed into political committees Uthmeier controlled while he served in state government. Investigators did not find sufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against anyone involved in the matter. Democratic lawmakers said the findings still raise serious questions about how the attorney general handled public settlement funds. Uthmeier’s office has not issued a detailed public response to the impeachment request. 12
McMaster Signs South Carolina Funding Measure
On Wednesday, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed H. 3305, a supplemental appropriations bill directing nonrecurring state funds toward earmarked local projects across South Carolina. The governor’s office said the funding covers community projects statewide that had been delayed earlier this year as lawmakers worked through the annual budget process. McMaster signed the state’s main fiscal year 2027 budget in mid-August, and Wednesday’s action completes a related piece of the state’s overall spending plan. State officials said the money must reach designated projects by the end of the month. The signing closes out a budget cycle lawmakers said was slowed by disputes over one-time funds. 13
