Trump Asks Supreme Court To Save Ballroom
On Friday, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to let construction continue on the president’s White House ballroom while a legal fight plays out. Solicitor General D. John Sauer said halting work would threaten national security, noting the $400 million project is now 65 percent complete. The filing followed an Aug. 7 ruling in which a federal appeals court found that Congress, not the president, must approve major changes to the White House. That panel paused its order two weeks to allow an appeal. Chief Justice John Roberts gave challengers until Aug. 18 to respond. Construction stops Aug. 21 unless the court intervenes.. 1, 2
Judge Clears Way To End Somalia Protections
On Friday, a federal judge cleared the way for the Trump administration to end deportation protections for nearly 1,100 Somali nationals living in the United States. U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston lifted a hold she had placed earlier this year, letting the Department of Homeland Security terminate Temporary Protected Status for Somalia. Burroughs wrote the challengers would suffer real harm but were unlikely to win their case after the Supreme Court’s June ruling limiting review of similar terminations for Haiti and Syria. She said that ruling foreclosed claims the reasoning reflected racial discrimination. Only Ethiopia’s status remains blocked.. 3, 4
Trump Touts Crime Drop At NY Police Visit
On Friday, President Trump visited a police academy on Long Island to announce new FBI data showing a sharp decline in violent crime during 2025, part of an effort to boost Republicans ahead of November’s midterms. The report showed murder fell an estimated 18.1 percent and robberies fell 18.5 percent, with violent crime overall down 9.3 percent. Trump credited his immigration policies for the decline, though the data largely predates his return to office, and experts say multiple factors drive crime trends. Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel joined him. Gov. Kathy Hochul’s campaign said crime had risen under Trump ally Bruce Blakeman.. 5, 6
Judge Backs Border Wall On Tribal Land
On Friday, a federal judge refused to block the Trump administration from building an international border wall across part of the Tohono O’odham Nation’s reservation in Arizona without the tribe’s consent. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon in Washington rejected the tribe’s request to halt construction of 62 miles of wall planned across its reservation. Leon ruled the tribe had not shown the wall would change its reservation boundaries without congressional authority, rejecting claims the project would illegally trespass on tribal land. He wrote the government’s interest in securing the border outweighed harm to the tribe at this stage. The lawsuit continues.. 7
Judge Rejects DOJ Bid For Voter Data
On Friday, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit the Justice Department filed seeking Nevada residents’ driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers from the state’s voter rolls. U.S. District Judge Anne Traum ruled that a federal law requiring states to maintain accurate voter lists does not force officials to hand over records the state itself created. She wrote the Justice Department had not shown a sufficient basis for its request. The ruling brings the administration’s record in similar voter roll cases nationwide to zero wins in twenty-two lawsuits. Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar called the decision a victory for voter privacy.. 8, 9

New York Presses Sheriffs On ICE Deals
On Friday, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James said five of twelve New York law enforcement agencies had agreed to end cooperation with federal immigration authorities, ahead of a state law taking effect this month. The remaining seven agencies, including the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and Police Department, now have eleven days to formally end their so-called 287(g) agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The state notified all twelve agencies in July that the arrangements, which let local officers perform certain federal immigration duties, must end under a law Hochul signed in May. “Local police should focus on keeping communities safe,” the officials said.. 10, 11
Poll: Becerra Leads California Governor Race
A poll released Friday showed Democrat Xavier Becerra holding a wide lead over Republican Steve Hilton in California’s race for governor, with less than three months before Election Day. The survey, conducted by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies and the Los Angeles Times, found Becerra with 55 percent support to Hilton’s 37 percent, with 7 percent undecided. Becerra, a former state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, seeks to succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom. Hilton, a former Fox News commentator, has struggled to gain traction in the heavily Democratic state. Early voting begins in October, with the election set for November.. 12, 13
Illinois Governor Signs Flood Rebate Law
On Friday, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill creating a rebate program for homeowners whose properties suffered flood damage following recent severe storms in the Chicago area. The law, Senate Bill 3925, authorizes local home equity assurance programs to provide direct financial relief to eligible homeowners in flood-prone neighborhoods. Participating households can receive a one-time rebate covering up to half of their qualifying flood-related expenses, up to a maximum of $1,000 per household. Homeowners must submit documented repair receipts to their program’s governing commission to qualify. Pritzker signed the bill during a tour of storm damage, and the program runs for three years.. 14
