Judge Blocks Justice Department Voter Roll Program
On Friday, a federal judge ruled that the Justice Department’s nationwide voter roll program was unlawful and vacated the policy. U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan found that the department lacked authority to obtain unredacted state voter files, compare them with federal citizenship records and press states to remove people flagged as ineligible. The ruling also bars use of files voluntarily supplied by states. Sooknanan said the government had not adequately considered the danger of mistakenly removing eligible citizens. States may continue maintaining their own rolls, including voluntary use of the federal SAVE database, without Justice Department direction. 1, 2
Trump Opens Russian Diesel Supply to Markets
On Friday, President Donald Trump announced an agreement for Russia to supply diesel to the United States and global markets as fuel prices remained near record levels. Trump said Russia would immediately provide more than 300,000 tons, followed by larger shipments in November and afterward. The Treasury Department then issued a temporary license allowing Russian diesel sales, deliveries and imports. The decision eases pressure imposed on Moscow even though Trump signed a broad Russia sanctions law last month. The White House did not explain who would buy the fuel or when supplies intended for the United States would become available. 3, 4
Trump Takes Clinton Lawsuit to Supreme Court
On Friday, President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to revive his dismissed lawsuit accusing Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey and others of conspiring to link his 2016 campaign to Russia. A federal judge dismissed the case and ordered Trump and attorney Alina Habba to pay nearly $1 million in sanctions, calling the suit frivolous. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld those rulings in 2025. Trump’s lawyers told the justices that the lower-court decisions affect the presidency and the nation. The Supreme Court has discretion over whether to hear the appeal. 5
Trump Names Katie Zacharia as Press Secretary
On Friday, President Donald Trump named conservative commentator Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary, filling a post left open after Karoline Leavitt departed in August. Zacharia has worked as a communications adviser for Trump’s media company and briefly served as a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson earlier this year. She has also appeared as a commentator on Fox News and Newsmax. The appointment places her in one of the administration’s most visible jobs less than four weeks before the midterm elections. It also comes while the White House remains in court over its attempted restrictions on several news organizations. 6
House Democrats Seek Seventeen Million for Races
On Friday, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee told donors it needed $17 million by October 22 to compete in additional Republican-held House districts. Executive Director Julie Merz wrote that the party could otherwise leave winnable races without enough support. The memo identified seats in Florida, Nevada, South Carolina and New York that President Trump carried by double digits in 2024. Democrats said their internal polling showed those contests were competitive but cited a major Republican financial advantage. The National Republican Congressional Committee answered that additional money would not change voter opposition to Democratic candidates and said Republicans remained on offense across the map. 7

Hochul Joins Federal Scholarship Tax Credit Program
On Friday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state would join the new federal scholarship tax credit program. The program allows taxpayers to claim a federal credit of up to $1,700 for qualifying donations to scholarship organizations. Hochul said her decision followed a review of federal rules and assurances that public school students could benefit without reducing state or local education budgets. Teachers’ unions have opposed the policy as a private school voucher program, while Jewish community groups have supported participation. Hochul said she had also asked business leaders to direct support toward public school students and their academic needs. 8, 9
Alabama Court Keeps Tuberville on Governor Ballot
On Friday, the Alabama Supreme Court upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit challenging Republican gubernatorial nominee Tommy Tuberville’s residency and eligibility. The unanimous court said the Montgomery Circuit Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case through the legal procedure used by the plaintiffs. The justices ruled that a party nominee does not exercise public office and therefore cannot face that type of preelection challenge. The decision did not determine whether Tuberville satisfies Alabama’s seven-year residency requirement for governor. The plaintiffs’ attorney criticized the ruling, while Tuberville’s campaign said repeated legal challenges had failed and voters should decide the election. 10, 11
Trump Rallies New York Voters Behind Blakeman
On Friday night, President Donald Trump campaigned in Syracuse for Republican gubernatorial nominee Bruce Blakeman and other New York candidates. Trump urged voters to defeat Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and called for an end to state and local sanctuary policies. He also endorsed Republican congressional candidates Anthony Constantino and Kailee Buller from the stage. Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, told the crowd that he would remove New York’s sanctuary-state status and argued that his relationship with Trump would help the state. The rally brought the president into a statewide contest less than four weeks before voters choose their next governor. 12
