Supreme Court Clears Trump Mail-Ballot Order
On Monday, the Supreme Court lifted a lower court order blocking President Trump’s administration from moving ahead with a mail-in voting order before the midterms. The 6-3 conservative majority ruled that a coalition of 23 states and the District of Columbia, led by California, sued too early, since the government had not yet enforced the order. The court did not decide whether the order itself is lawful and left room for states to sue again once agencies act. A separate order blocking the Postal Service from enforcing tighter mail ballot rules remains in place. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, warning of added uncertainty.1, 2
Bessent Unveils New Round Of Iran Sanctions
On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced new sanctions on Iran, calling it the opening move of what the administration has labeled “Operation Economic Outcast.” The Treasury Department sanctioned nearly 60 individuals, companies and vessels it said help Iran sell oil and move money to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Bessent said Washington is warning other countries, including major trading partners, to cut financial ties with Tehran or face secondary sanctions of their own. He declined to name specific countries, saying the administration is giving nations “the opportunity to remedy that behavior.” Bessent previewed additional sanctions on a financial institution later this week.3, 4
Trump Announces New Tariffs On Canadian Autos
President Trump said on Monday that the United States will impose a 50 percent tariff on Canadian automobiles, auto parts and steel starting January 1, 2027, after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa broke down last week. Writing on Truth Social, Trump accused Canada of charging “massive” tariffs on American farm goods for years and said the country “wants the benefits of being a State, without being one.” The move follows tariffs already placed on roughly 20 billion dollars of Canadian goods. Some Republicans have pushed back on related tariff moves. Canadian officials vowed retaliation, and American trade representatives blamed Canada for the collapse of talks.5
Vance Campaigns For LePage In Maine Visit
Vice President JD Vance traveled to Brewer, Maine, on Monday to campaign for Republican candidates ahead of the November midterms. Speaking at a manufacturing facility, Vance said Democrats “are trying to tear down this country” and argued his party offers a better path for working families. He renewed criticism of what he called health care fraud in Maine’s Medicaid program and endorsed former Governor Paul LePage, the Republican nominee for the state’s 2nd Congressional District. Vance praised Senator Susan Collins, who did not attend, calling her an independent voice for Maine. He also addressed the tariff dispute with Canada.6, 7
Trump Touts School Choice At Rose Garden
President Trump hosted a “back to school” event in the White House Rose Garden on Monday with Education Secretary Linda McMahon, students, parents and teachers to highlight his school choice initiatives. Trump touted the Education Freedom Tax Credit, part of last year’s tax law, which lets taxpayers claim up to 1,700 dollars for donations supporting private school scholarships. He also pointed to expanded 529 education savings accounts, which now let families withdraw up to 20,000 dollars a year for K-12 or homeschool expenses. McMahon cautioned schools against what she called “radical experiments” involving gender transition policies for students.8

Newsom Vows New Suit Over Mail Voting Rule
Governor Gavin Newsom said on Monday that California will file a new lawsuit against the Trump administration over its mail-in voting restrictions, hours after the Supreme Court allowed the president’s executive order to move forward for now. “California will be suing AGAIN to block these Orwellian rules from being implemented,” Newsom said in a statement. He pointed to state legislation moving through Sacramento, including a bill that would make it a felony for an official to direct interference with the delivery of a mail ballot. Newsom said the effort is meant to defend the state’s election system from federal interference.9
Abbott Fights Minnesota’s ICE Extradition Bid
On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott asked a federal judge to reject Minnesota’s bid to extradite an ICE officer held in a Texas jail. Christian Castro faces assault charges in Minnesota tied to a shooting during a federal immigration crackdown in Minneapolis. Abbott’s filing said he has “serious concerns” about whether Castro qualifies as a fugitive, since Castro said he returned to Texas on federal orders rather than fleeing. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz sued Abbott last week after unanswered letters, and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison called Abbott’s refusal “unconstitutional.” Abbott said his office is reviewing the case, and both sides are due in court Tuesday.10
Tong Urges Rejection Of Insurance Rate Hikes
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said on Monday that he sent a letter urging the state’s insurance commissioner to reject double-digit rate increases sought by three health insurers for individual and small group plans. Tong asked Commissioner Josh Hershman to deny requests from Anthem, ConnectiCare and UnitedHealthcare, which he said would raise costs for roughly 220,000 residents. The attorney general argued the proposed increases are unjustified and would burden Connecticut families and small businesses already facing rising health care costs. Tong’s office said it will continue reviewing the filings before the commissioner makes a final decision.11
