Trump Cuts South Korea Drills, Cites Kim Ties
On Sunday, President Trump said he ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea a day before the drills were set to begin. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the decision followed his “very good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and frustration that South Korea declined to help pressure Iran. He called the exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, costly and said they sent an inappropriate signal to North Korea. The drills involve about eighteen thousand South Korean troops. South Korea’s government said it would keep coordinating with Washington, and its military said the exercises began Monday as planned. 1, 2
Trump Recasts Ballroom As Security Necessity
Late Friday, ahead of Sunday coverage of the dispute, President Trump wrote on Truth Social that the White House needs a “desperately needed National Security structure,” reframing his contested ballroom project as a military necessity. An appeals court ordered construction halted by August 21 unless Congress approves the four hundred million dollar project, which Trump demolished the East Wing to build. Officials told the Supreme Court on Friday the ballroom would shield the grounds from drone and sniper attacks and cover a military complex beneath it. Trump argued the ballroom and the complex cannot be separated. Congress remains on recess with no return planned. 3, 4
Blanche Weighs Supreme Court Voter Roll Fight
Attorney General Todd Blanche said Sunday the Justice Department could take its fight over state voter rolls to the Supreme Court after losing twenty-two of thirty cases in lower courts. Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Blanche called Supreme Court review “absolutely” a possibility as the department seeks state voter data. In a separate interview that morning, Blanche addressed the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie in Arizona, saying he does not believe the FBI should take over the state and local investigation. He said federal authorities are providing manpower and forensic assistance, but seizing control of the case is “not necessarily the right thing to do.” 5, 6
Jeffries Rejects DSA Agenda On Meet The Press
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Sunday he does not support the agenda of the Democratic Socialists of America, drawing a line as his party debates its direction ahead of the midterms. Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Jeffries said he opposes defunding the police, open borders and abolishing the Senate, and does not currently back Medicare for All legislation. He declined to say whether Democrats would vote to abolish ICE if they retake the House, instead calling for “dramatic” reforms including body cameras and judicial warrants. Jeffries said the caucus will stay broad, with the midterm message centered on affordability rather than ideology. 7
Navy Families Rebuke Trump Over Ship Conditions
Families of American sailors deployed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Tripoli said Sunday they are angered by President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissing concerns about extended deployments tied to the conflict with Iran. Relatives described crew members losing twenty to thirty pounds and enduring scarce mental health support during deployments now in their ninth month. Asked Friday whether naval families were worried, Trump said “no, they’re not,” and called the deployment “not nearly long enough.” Hegseth said accounts of onboard conditions had been “completely misrepresented.” One sailor’s sister said she was angry officials were “calling them liars.” 8

Green Shuts Down Hawaii As Lala Batters Islands
Hawaii Governor Josh Green announced Sunday that state and county offices, public schools and courts will close statewide Monday as Tropical Storm Lala continues battering the islands. Lala weakened from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm Sunday after its eyewall skirted the Big Island without making landfall, though its outer bands kept lashing the state with rain and wind. Green said at least one hundred homes on the Big Island were damaged or destroyed, and more than one hundred fifty thousand customers lost power. He said no storm deaths had been confirmed as of Sunday, though a car accident there remained under investigation for a possible link. 9, 10
Beshear Presses McConnell For Health Update
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said Sunday he has heard “absolutely nothing back” from Senator Mitch McConnell after repeatedly asking for an update on the eighty-four-year-old senator’s health and ability to serve. Speaking on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Beshear said McConnell, who was hospitalized in June after a fall and has been recovering at home since, owes Kentuckians a direct explanation. Beshear said Senate Majority Leader John Thune has a duty to ensure senators can carry out their responsibilities but has treated the matter as not his job. He said he wishes McConnell “good health,” but argued the senator could easily address the public himself. 11, 12
California Assembly Passes Diaper Chemical Bill
California’s State Assembly voted Sunday, sixty-eight to one, for a bill requiring disposable diaper manufacturers to disclose chemicals they intentionally add to their products, sending the measure to the state Senate. The bill would require companies to post a full list of added ingredients, including their purpose, on a public website by January 2028, and on packaging by January 2029. California would join New York as the only states requiring such disclosure, and supporters say the measure goes further by covering packaging too. The bill authorizes the attorney general and local prosecutors to enforce it, with penalties up to ten thousand dollars for repeat violations. 13
