Trump Renews Push For Canada Statehood Bid
President Trump escalated his trade dispute with Canada early Sunday, posting on Truth Social that Canada wants the benefits of being a U.S. state without accepting statehood. The post came after trade talks between the two countries collapsed and a new 50 percent tariff on Canadian goods took effect Saturday. Trump accused Canada of imposing heavy tariffs on American farmers for years, writing that there would be no more of it. Canada’s government did not immediately respond. Prime Minister Mark Carney had already said Canada would impose reciprocal tariffs on American goods starting September 8, covering products worth more than 28 billion dollars. 1
Scott Calls Democratic Left Wing Radical
Republicans and Democrats clashed Sunday over how recent progressive primary wins will affect the midterms. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina told NBC’s Meet the Press the Democratic left wing is dangerous, radical, and weird, citing wins by Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and Angie Nixon in Florida. Representative Ashley Hinson of Iowa and Texas Governor Greg Abbott made similar arguments Sunday. Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland responded on the same program that Democrats are united against President Trump and the party’s debate over direction is healthy. Van Hollen said he would not reject a Democratic Socialists of America endorsement but was not seeking one. 2
Van Hollen Says He Is Weighing 2028 Run
Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland said Sunday he is actively considering a run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Van Hollen told host Kristen Welker he is kicking the tires and testing the waters, noting he has already visited early voting states Iowa and New Hampshire. He said Democrats must be clear about what they support, not only what they oppose, and argued the party lacks a clear economic alternative to President Trump. Van Hollen said he is not seeking to challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, but wants to shape the party’s direction heading into the midterms. 3
Jeffries And Kushner Held Private Talks
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met privately in recent weeks with Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and outside adviser, to discuss potential common ground, people familiar with the meeting said Sunday. The session took place in a private space in New York City, arranged by a mutual friend of the two men, who have kept in touch since working together on criminal justice legislation during Trump’s first term. Neither man commented publicly through aides. One person familiar with the meeting called it a broad conversation rather than formal negotiation. The timing suggests Trump allies are preparing for a possible Democratic-led House after the midterms. 4
Cook Report Keeps Senate Rated A Toss-Up
Strategists from both parties continued reacting Sunday to the Cook Political Report’s decision to rate the Texas and Iowa Senate races as toss-ups rather than leaning Republican. Cook shifted its ratings after polling showed Democrat James Talarico close to Republican Ken Paxton in Texas, and Democrat Josh Turek competitive with Republican Ashley Hinson in Iowa. Cook’s Jessica Taylor wrote that Republicans still hold a structural advantage but that Democrats now have a realistic path in states President Trump won by double digits in 2024. Democrats need four more seats to flip the Senate’s 53 to 47 Republican majority. Republicans called the changes premature Sunday. 5, 6

Abbott Sets New Rules For AI Data Centers
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Sunday his state paused approval of new artificial intelligence data centers while adding stricter guardrails, addressing backlash ahead of the midterms. On ABC’s This Week, Abbott said centers seeking to operate in Texas must disclose water use, avoid straining the power grid, lower electricity costs, and gain local approval before construction. The move follows months of town hall protests over data centers driving up utility bills and straining resources. An ABC News analysis found Texas has over 300 data centers operating with 200 more planned. Trump called the pause a mistake, saying centers could be bigger for Texas than oil. 7, 8
Green Seeks More Federal Aid For Hawaii
Hawaii officials said Sunday the state is continuing to press the White House for expanded federal disaster assistance following Tropical Cyclone Lala, while preparing for Tropical Storm Moke. Emergency agencies said Hawaii remains ready to support county response, particularly on Hawaii Island, as Moke is expected to pass south of the islands but bring five to ten inches of rain. Governor Josh Green signed a formal request this past week seeking a presidential emergency declaration covering Hawaii, Maui, and Honolulu counties, asking for generators and temporary power systems. About 11,290 customers on Hawaii Island remained without electricity Sunday, with restoration not expected until early September. 9, 10
South Carolina Runoff Enters Final Stretch
South Carolina’s Republican Senate runoff between Senator Darline Graham and Representative Ralph Norman entered its final two days Sunday, with both campaigns making closing appeals before Tuesday’s vote. Graham, the Trump-endorsed incumbent appointed to fill her late brother Lindsey Graham’s seat, led a crowded primary field earlier this month, while Norman edged out Representative Russell Fry and former Governor Mark Sanford for second place. Both candidates used Sunday television and radio appearances to court undecided Republican voters, stressing loyalty to President Trump’s agenda. Neither campaign released new polling over the weekend. The winner will face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews in November’s special general election. 11
