Judge Orders Halt to Taxpayer-Funded Trump Ads
A federal judge in New York on Sunday night ordered the Trump administration to cancel any remaining television ads paid for with taxpayer money that promote the president’s political message. U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon granted a temporary restraining order sought by a coalition that includes the nonpartisan watchdog Common Cause, which called the ads an illegal misuse of funds. The Department of Homeland Security tapped $20 million for the campaign, and about $19 million had been spent. The Justice Department argued the ads would end Sunday anyway, but the judge ruled that did not settle the case. Her order lasts two weeks.1, 2
Bipartisan Senators Urge Trump to Reverse Diesel Deal
A bipartisan group of senators on Sunday called on President Trump to “immediately reverse course” on his decision to allow imports of Russian diesel. Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis and John Curtis joined Democrats Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal and Ron Wyden in a statement arguing that the move conflicts with a 2022 law banning Russian energy imports. Tillis said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that there is “a legitimate case for saying the president’s not following the law.” Senate Republican Whip John Barrasso defended the deal on CBS, saying the president is “focused on getting down the cost of energy.”3, 4
Mullin Defends Plan to Livestream Fort Hood Execution
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on Sunday defended the Pentagon’s plan to livestream the Dec. 3 firing-squad execution of Fort Hood gunman Nidal Hasan. Speaking on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Mullin said, “No one has to watch it if they don’t choose to,” and added, “I follow President Trump.” Asked whether a broadcast could help radicalize extremists, he said, “I don’t see an elevated risk at this point at all because of this.” Republicans including Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Rep. Austin Scott have opposed the plan, warning it could make Hasan a martyr. Trump said Saturday he would make the final decision.5, 4
Poll: Fitzpatrick and Harvie Tied in Pennsylvania Race
A Democratic internal poll released Sunday found Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick tied with Democratic challenger Bob Harvie in Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District, a suburban Philadelphia seat Fitzpatrick won by about 13 points in 2024. The Global Strategy Group survey, conducted last week, showed each candidate at 46% among likely voters, with 8% undecided. A poll for the Fitzpatrick campaign and the National Republican Congressional Committee last month gave the incumbent a 9-point lead. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has committed $900,000 to the race, and House Majority PAC has spent more than $6 million reserving television ads, according to AdImpact data.6

Graham and Andrews Clash in South Carolina Senate Debate
Republican Sen. Darline Graham and Democratic nominee Annie Andrews met Sunday night in the only debate of South Carolina’s Senate race, three weeks before the general election. Graham was appointed to serve out the term of her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, who died in July, and later won a special primary runoff with President Trump’s endorsement. Andrews called Graham “unserious and unqualified,” citing her earlier remark that “national security is not my thing.” Graham replied that Andrews had “flip-flopped on everything” and said, “I’m just as qualified as you.” Libertarian Kasie Whitener also took part. Early voting begins Oct. 19.7
Kansas Senate Hopeful Hamilton Rejects Vance Attack
Kansas Democratic Senate nominee Adam Hamilton on Sunday called Vice President JD Vance’s criticism of his faith “a sign of desperation.” Vance had accused Hamilton, a United Methodist pastor, of believing “it’s a sin to be white and a sin to raise cattle and eat meat.” On ABC’s “This Week,” Hamilton said, “Every single line of what you just read was a lie.” Hamilton, who was a registered Republican until February, is challenging Republican Sen. Roger Marshall. He said Trump’s support in Kansas was “eroding” and that he would not back Chuck Schumer as Senate Democratic leader. Marshall said Republicans are “coming home.”8
El-Sayed Walks Back Past Criticism of Barack Obama
Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed on Sunday softened his past criticism of former President Barack Obama, who is scheduled to campaign with him in Detroit on Oct. 24. On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” El-Sayed was asked about a 2012 op-ed in which he wrote that “Obama was not the right choice.” He replied that Obama “was handed a really difficult set of circumstances, and he did his best.” He added that Democrats running today “stand on the shoulders of giants.” El-Sayed faces former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country.9, 10
Montana Senate Candidates Meet in First Joint Debate
The four candidates for Montana’s U.S. Senate seat appeared on stage together for the first time Sunday morning in a 90-minute debate in Bozeman. Independent Seth Bodnar, a former University of Montana president, criticized Republican Kurt Alme over his handling of sexual abuse cases as a federal prosecutor and over Sen. Steve Daines’ move to withdraw from the race and endorse Alme. Alme, a former U.S. attorney, said he had balanced a budget and would do it again in Washington. Democrat Alani Bankhead backed universal health care, and Libertarian Kyle Austin called himself “the real conservative in this race.”11
