US Imposes 50% Tariffs On Canadian Goods
On Friday night, trade talks between the United States and Canada collapsed, and both countries confirmed new 50 percent tariffs on some Canadian goods would take effect. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada made last minute demands that upset a preliminary deal from earlier in the week, prompting the tariffs to begin at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time Saturday. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was suspending negotiations, accusing the United States of changing terms he called unfair, and said Canada would match the tariffs dollar for dollar. The duties, invoked under a 1930 trade law, cover roughly 20 billion dollars in Canadian goods.1, 2
Roberts Allows Trump Ballroom Construction To Continue
On Friday, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a temporary order letting construction continue on President Trump’s 400 million dollar White House ballroom project. The order paused a lower court ruling that would have halted above ground work that day, while the full court considers the case. The dispute centers on whether Trump needed congressional approval before demolishing the East Wing to build the new structure. An appeals court had ruled 2 to 1 this month that the project required Congress’s consent, not just executive action. The administration says the project is roughly 65 percent finished. Roberts did not explain his reasoning.3, 4
Appeals Court Keeps Block On James Subpoenas
On Friday, a federal appeals court upheld a ruling blocking the Justice Department from enforcing subpoenas against New York Attorney General Letitia James’s office. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2 to 1 that the subpoenas could not stand because the Albany prosecutor who issued them was serving unlawfully. The subpoenas sought records tied to lawsuits James filed against former President Trump’s family business and against the National Rifle Association. Both Trump and the NRA were found liable in those earlier cases. James’s office argued the subpoenas amounted to retaliation. No criminal charges have been filed.5, 6
Trump Opens Tariff-Free Window For Beef Imports
On Friday, President Trump announced the United States will temporarily allow foreign beef imports without added tariffs to help lower record high grocery prices. Under the 90 day plan, up to 300,000 metric tons of lean beef trimmings used for ground beef can enter duty free. Trump said on social media the imported beef must sell at 25 percent below current market prices, though he did not name the countries involved. The move drew swift criticism from Republican senators and cattle industry groups, who warned it could hurt American ranchers. A White House official said the plan is not yet final.7, 8
Judge Denies Disney Rush Hearing In FCC Suit
On Friday, a federal judge rejected Disney’s request for an expedited hearing in its lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission. Disney sued last week to block what it called an improper early review of broadcast licenses for its eight company owned ABC stations. U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan denied Disney’s bid for a hearing by Tuesday, saying the government showed it was not urgently necessary. The FCC agreed to give Disney at least 48 hours notice before referring the licenses for a hearing. FCC Chair Brendan Carr said the lawsuit lacked merit and that he has not yet decided whether to refer the licenses further.9
Trump Stumps For Graham Ahead Of SC Runoff
On Friday, President Trump traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to campaign for Sen. Darline Graham ahead of Tuesday’s Republican Senate primary runoff. Graham, appointed to fill the seat of her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, faces Rep. Ralph Norman for the nomination. Trump told a crowd of thousands that helping Graham win Tuesday was the first step toward keeping the seat in Republican hands come November. Neither candidate won a majority in the August 11 special primary, which triggered the runoff. The winner advances to face Democratic nominee Dr. Annie Andrews in the general election.10

Pritzker Signs Bills, Names Transit Board
On Friday, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed a slate of bills into law, including legislation creating a committee to address PFAS contamination in wastewater. He also signed measures requiring sanitary conditions for menstruating and lactating workers at construction sites, allowing disability designations on state driver’s licenses, and delaying certain changes to the state’s Unemployment Insurance Act. Pritzker separately announced new appointments to the newly formed Northern Illinois Transit Authority board, part of a broader overhaul of regional transit governance. The actions reflect Illinois Democrats’ continued push on workplace protections and environmental oversight even as national attention remains fixed on the midterm campaign season.11
Early Voting Ends In South Carolina Senate Runoff
On Friday, early voting concluded in South Carolina ahead of Tuesday’s Republican Senate primary runoff between Sen. Darline Graham and Rep. Ralph Norman. The State Election Commission reminded voters that early voting centers closed at 5 p.m., with Election Day polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Neither candidate secured a majority in the August 11 special primary held after the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, forcing the runoff. Graham led that contest with about 33 percent of the vote, followed by Norman with roughly 25 percent. The winner faces Democratic nominee Dr. Annie Andrews in November.12, 13
