Trump Rallies Texas Republicans Behind Paxton
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump rallied in San Antonio for Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton as the party worked to protect a Texas seat central to its Senate majority. Trump praised Paxton’s record as state attorney general and spent much of his speech criticizing Democratic nominee James Talarico. The event was repeatedly interrupted by protesters, some of whom police removed. Republican Governor Greg Abbott did not attend and instead had another scheduled event. Trump’s appearance was his third Texas trip in less than a month, reflecting Republican concern about a race in a state that has not elected a Democratic senator since 1988.1, 2
Transportation Department Revises Transit Grant Rules
On Wednesday, the Transportation Department proposed changing how it awards grants for major transit projects, including a 10 percent funding increase for areas with above-average marriage and birth rates. The proposal would apply to 40 projects already participating in a program for light rail, bus and commuter rail systems. The department said the revisions would also impose firm deadlines and require greater local accountability. Democratic Senator Patty Murray of Washington criticized tying transit funding to family statistics and said projects in Washington, Boston, Silicon Valley and Austin could lose money. The department distributes about $20 billion annually through its transit grant programs.3
Rogers Calls for Ending Canada Tariff Dispute
On Wednesday, Michigan Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers called for an immediate end to the United States tariff dispute with Canada, departing from President Donald Trump on a major campaign issue. In an advertisement posted online, Rogers said ending the dispute would lower costs for Michigan businesses and consumers. He had previously supported Trump’s tariffs while warning against a single approach for every trading partner. Rogers faces Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in a closely watched contest. Michigan automakers rely on supply chains that cross the Canadian border, while industry leaders have warned that a prolonged trade dispute could threaten jobs and increase costs.4
Poll Finds Broad Concern About Federal AI Policy
On Wednesday, a Reuters and Ipsos poll found that 57 percent of registered voters believed the Trump administration was not taking artificial intelligence risks seriously enough, while 54 percent said the same about Congress. The survey also found that 84 percent viewed AI as a threat to American workers. Support for stricter federal regulation reached 80 percent among Democrats and 61 percent among Republicans. Fifty-six percent favored limits on new data centers, including 55 percent of independents. The nationwide online poll surveyed 4,506 adults, including 3,526 registered voters, and had a margin of error of two percentage points.5
Trump Backs Presidential Retreat at Florida Club
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump endorsed a proposal to convert part of his West Palm Beach golf club into a presidential retreat modeled on Camp David. Trump said the site has security advantages because it is near an airport and lacks nearby tall buildings and homes. The Trump Organization owns the club but leases its land from Palm Beach County, which would need to approve changes. Under the proposal, the club would pay to construct presidential lodging and provide the federal government access. Trump said the retreat would be intended for future presidents, visiting foreign leaders and official meetings, not for his personal use.6, 7

North Carolina Lawmakers Approve Gas Tax Pause
On Wednesday, North Carolina lawmakers approved a temporary suspension of the state’s 41-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax through November 30 and sent the measure to Democratic Governor Josh Stein. The House passed the bill 111 to 1, while the Senate approved it 41 to 0. Lawmakers estimated that the suspension would cost about $360 million, with money from a state reserve replacing lost transportation revenue. Stein had signaled support for relief while insisting that road funding be protected. Legislators acknowledged that stations might not immediately pass the full savings to drivers because fuel already in storage was purchased with the tax included.8, 9
Florida Poll Shows Republican Statewide Leads
On Wednesday, an NBC South Florida and Telemundo poll showed Republicans leading Florida’s races for governor and United States Senate. Republican Byron Donalds received 48 percent in the governor’s contest, compared with 41 percent for Democrat David Jolly, while 10 percent were undecided. In the Senate race, Republican Ashley Moody led Democrat Angie Nixon 50 percent to 40 percent. The survey also found that 30 percent of voters ranked inflation and the cost of living as the issue most likely to shape their vote. Mason-Dixon interviewed 625 likely voters by telephone, with a four-point margin of error.10, 11
Illinois Launches Grain Storage Loan Program
On Wednesday, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Finance Authority launched a pilot loan program to help farmers finance on-site grain storage facilities and related equipment. The authority will contribute capital to loans made by private lenders, with an anticipated interest rate of 2 percent. State officials said additional storage can reduce transportation and remote storage costs while allowing farmers more control over when they sell their crops. The program is intended to make financing more affordable and share lending risk with participating banks. Pritzker announced the initiative during a farm visit in Gardner as producers faced higher operating costs and uncertain markets.12, 13
