Judge Rules Trump Unlawfully Targeted Foreign Students
A federal judge in California ruled Friday that the Trump administration violated the constitutional rights of international students when it revoked visas over criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza. Judge Noel Wise found provisions of immigration law used to arrest and deport students were unconstitutionally vague and had been used to punish disfavored speech. The 90-page ruling declared a section of law frequently invoked by the State Department violated the First and Fifth Amendments. Wise said the government had singled out pro-Palestinian speech for what she called a campaign of retribution. The ruling echoed a similar decision last year by a judge in Boston. 1, 2
Trump Asks Supreme Court On Transgender Troop Ban
The Trump administration on Friday asked the Supreme Court to let the Pentagon fully enforce its ban on transgender troops in the military. Solicitor General D. John Sauer asked the justices to reverse a June ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit that blocked the policy for transgender service members who sued. Sauer called the ruling “gravely erroneous” and said the military’s authority to decide who serves deserved deference. The appeals panel ruled 2 to 1 that the ban appeared driven by animus toward transgender people. The court is expected to decide this fall whether to hear the case. 3, 4
Trump Announces Sweeping Venezuela Oil Deal
President Trump announced Friday evening that the United States has reached an agreement with Venezuela giving American interests majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of the country’s oil reserves. Trump said the deal, negotiated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth with Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, was struck through a partnership with private businesses “at no cost to the American taxpayer.” Trump called it “the biggest oil deal in world history” and said it would lower gas prices. Rodriguez’s government said the agreement covers seventeen oil fields and could draw 100 billion dollars in investment. 5, 6
Judge Rejects Trump Bid To Move Hush Money Case
A federal judge in Manhattan on Friday rejected President Trump’s third attempt to move his hush money case to federal court, where he hoped his conviction could be dismissed on immunity grounds. Judge Alvin Hellerstein wrote that Trump’s latest arguments were “neither new nor legally sufficient” and that he “failed to show good cause and diligence.” Hellerstein said discussions about hush money payments covering up Trump’s relationship with Stormy Daniels were not official acts protected by immunity. Trump was convicted in 2024 on 34 felony counts of falsifying records. A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team called the ruling “baseless and lawless” and said he would appeal. 7, 8
Wyoming Governor Wants Probe Of Election Monitors
Wyoming’s Republican governor, Mark Gordon, said Friday he wants his attorney general to investigate “aggressive” conduct by Justice Department election monitors during the state’s August 18 primary. Gordon told Cowboy State Daily he was “shocked” by reports that two Justice Department attorneys visited a Cheyenne polling site and sought to interview voters and inspect machines, requests officials denied. Laramie County Clerk Debra Lee said the monitors asked about poll worker training and how equipment was acquired, questions exceeding the scope of federal voting rights law. Gordon said it was too early to consider litigation. The Justice Department said monitors aimed to ensure compliance with federal law. 9, 10

California Sues Over Offshore Wind Lease Cancellation
California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit Friday challenging the Trump administration’s deal to cancel Golden State Wind’s offshore lease off the state’s Central Coast. Bonta argued the settlement, which paid the company 120 million dollars in federal funds to abandon the project, was an unlawful attempt to circumvent courts that had already struck down earlier efforts to halt offshore wind projects. The lawsuit contends the deal violated the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act because the payment was not tied to resolving an existing lawsuit. Bonta said the cancellation could cost California nearly 175,000 jobs and jeopardize 30 million dollars earmarked for workforce training. 11, 12
Arizona AG Vows To Defend In-State Tuition Law
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said Friday she would defend the state’s Proposition 308 after the federal government sued Arizona over the voter-approved law. The 2022 measure allows Arizona high school graduates who are not U.S. citizens to qualify for in-state college tuition regardless of immigration status. Mayes said the law reflects the will of Arizona voters and that she would fight the challenge in court. The announcement came the same day Mayes secured a restraining order blocking a separate Postal Service rule limiting mail-in voting in Arizona. Mayes has emerged as an active state official challenging the administration’s election policies. 13
Hochul Confirms New York’s ICE Cooperation Ban Complete
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said Friday on television that the state’s ban on local police agreements with federal immigration authorities is fully in effect. Hochul, appearing on MS NOW’s Morning Joe, said “I just banned it” when asked whether states could stop local police from partnering with ICE. The Local Cops Local Crimes Act, signed by Hochul in May, bars New York police and jails from entering 287(g) agreements that deputize officers for federal immigration enforcement. State officials said 11 of 13 counties with prior agreements ended them by the deadline. Hochul said police would continue assisting ICE only on criminal, not civil, matters. 14, 15
