Judge Lifts Final Blocks On Trump Ballot Order
A federal judge in Boston on Wednesday canceled the nationwide order she had issued blocking the Postal Service from carrying out President Trump’s executive order on mail-in voting, removing the last legal hold on the policy. Judge Indira Talwani said she had acted too early, citing the Supreme Court’s reasoning that the challenge came before the Postal Service issued a finalized plan. The Postal Service released its final rule for federal ballot mail on August 21. Challengers are now asking Talwani and a judge in Washington to block the finished plan, and any new ruling would likely reach the Supreme Court again.1, 2
States Sue Postal Service Over Mail Voting Rule
Attorneys general from 24 states and the District of Columbia, joined by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, filed suit on Wednesday to block the Postal Service rule governing mail voting in federal elections. The coalition argues that the rule exceeds the agency’s authority, interferes with the states’ primary role in running elections, and violates the Privacy Act and federal voting rights law. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said the underlying executive order is an unconstitutional power grab. The states asked the court for a temporary restraining order, noting that nearly 100 million ballots moved through the mail in the 2024 general election.3, 4
State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Appointments
The State Department on Wednesday paused immigrant visa appointments at United States embassies and consulates worldwide, saying it needs time to train consular officers. The department said the training will teach staff to screen applicants who might become dependent on public benefits, and to evaluate cases comprehensively and consistently, according to Reuters. Applicants with scheduled interviews received emails saying that their appointments would be rescheduled, with new dates to follow. The department did not describe the training in detail or say how long the pause will last. The step follows a court ruling on Friday striking down a visa suspension covering 75 countries.5, 6
Trump Declares Emergency Over Foreign Grid Equipment
President Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order declaring a national emergency over the foreign supply of equipment used in the nation’s bulk-power system. The order, issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, states that certain foreign actors are creating and exploiting weaknesses in the electric grid, and it points to risks including cyber activity, hidden digital access and supply disruption. It allows the Secretary of Energy to bar some purchases and installations of foreign-produced equipment and to require that equipment already in place be isolated, replaced or removed. Implementing rules are due within 120 days.7, 8
Treasury Sanctions Italy Group Over Antifa Ties
The Treasury and State Departments on Wednesday designated an Italy-based group, Autistici/Inventati, as a specially designated global terrorist entity, along with the United Kingdom organization Palestine Action and a network called Masar Badil. The State Department said the Italian collective supplies web hosting, encrypted email and other digital services used by violent far-left groups in the United States and Europe. Two men described as leaders of Masar Badil were also designated. The action blocks any property the groups hold under United States jurisdiction and generally bars Americans from carrying out financial transactions with them, the Treasury Department said.9, 10

Maryland Judge Blocks Redistricting Ballot Question
A Maryland judge on Wednesday ruled that a proposed state constitutional amendment changing how congressional districts are drawn cannot appear on the November ballot. Judge Robert J. Thompson of the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court found that Democratic lawmakers used an improper method to put the question before voters, and he placed his ruling on hold in anticipation of an appeal. State Senate Republican leader Steve Hershey called the decision a triumph for the rule of law. A spokesman for Governor Wes Moore said voters should have their say. Ballot printing is scheduled to begin on September 3.11, 12
Nassau County Ends Its Agreements With ICE
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced on Wednesday that the county has ended its cooperation agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, bringing it into line with a New York law that bars local police from such arrangements. Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Local Cops Local Crimes Act in May. Blakeman said that he disagrees with the measure but will follow it, calling the day one of the saddest of his time in office. The announcement came a day after the state attorney general subpoenaed the county police and sheriff’s departments. Blakeman and Hochul are opponents in this year’s race for governor.13, 14
DeSantis Urges Limits On License Plate Cameras
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday urged residents to press state lawmakers to regulate automated license plate cameras, saying he does not want Florida to become a surveillance state. Speaking at an event in Miami, DeSantis said that law enforcement should pursue criminals but should not track the everyday movements of ordinary residents. He criticized the Florida House for declining to act on a measure he had proposed, and he pointed to New Hampshire, which largely restricts government recording of public roads. DeSantis is in his final year in office, following his last legislative session as governor.15, 16
