Judge Again Blocks Postal Mail Ballot Rule
A federal judge on Thursday again blocked the U.S. Postal Service from carrying out new mail voting restrictions tied to a Trump executive order. Judge Indira Talwani ruled that the agency’s compliance plan, released last week, appeared to exceed its legal authority and could create confusion close to the midterms. She had allowed the Postal Service to move forward just one day earlier but reversed course after reviewing the final plan. The rule would have required special envelope designs and lists of voters eligible for mail ballots. Talwani blocked the rule for fourteen days and set a hearing on its legality for September 3. 1
Trump Signs Order Renaming Lake Ontario
President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” for federal purposes, deepening a trade dispute with Canada. The order directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the federal Geographic Names Information System within 30 days and remove references to Lake Ontario from federal records. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office the change was effective immediately, though the order only governs how U.S. federal agencies refer to the lake. Canada is not required to adopt the new name, and Canadian officials said they will keep calling it Lake Ontario. Governor Kathy Hochul said New York would not change its usage. 2, 3
States Sue Over New Title X Funding Rules
A coalition of twenty-three states filed a lawsuit Thursday challenging new conditions the Trump administration placed on Title X family planning funding. Led by attorneys general in New York, Maryland and Massachusetts, the states argue federal health officials adopted the conditions without following required rulemaking procedures. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Maryland, contends the policy would penalize states and providers that decline to align with the administration’s positions on abortion counseling and gender-affirming care. Officials said the funding supports contraception access, cancer screenings and preventive care for millions of low-income patients nationwide. The states are asking a judge to block enforcement. 4, 5
Justice Dept. Appeals Harvard Case Dismissal
The Justice Department filed notice Thursday that it will appeal a federal judge’s dismissal of its antisemitism lawsuit against Harvard University. The department asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit to overturn an August 13 ruling by Judge Richard Stearns, who found the government had not shown an ongoing civil rights violation at the school. Stearns wrote that the incidents cited by the administration, mostly from the 2023-2024 school year, were “too isolated and episodic” to prove persistent noncompliance. The lawsuit had accused Harvard of failing to protect Jewish students following campus protests over the war in Gaza. Harvard has denied the claims. 6, 7

Florida Democrats Demand Resignations On Medicaid Funds
Florida Democrats on Thursday called for resignations of top state officials after a leaked grand jury report found the DeSantis administration misappropriated ten million dollars in Medicaid settlement funds for political purposes. Democratic gubernatorial nominee David Jolly said he would reopen the investigation if elected, and state Senate Democrats called the findings “truly damning.” The money, from a settlement with health provider Centene, was routed through the Hope Florida Foundation before reaching political committees tied to Attorney General James Uthmeier. Uthmeier and Governor Ron DeSantis called the report a “hoax” and said the leak itself was the crime. The grand jury found insufficient evidence for charges. 10, 11
Poll Shows Tight South Carolina Governor Race
A new poll released Thursday showed South Carolina’s governor race tightening between Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson and Democratic state Representative Jermaine Johnson. The survey, by Hart Research Associates for the Johnson campaign, found Wilson leading 50 percent to 42 percent among likely voters, but his advantage nearly disappeared after voters heard detailed biographies of both candidates, narrowing to two points. The poll found Johnson had a more favorable rating than Wilson, though more voters still did not recognize his name. The race is for the seat being vacated by term-limited Governor Henry McMaster. Wisconsin Governor Race Poll Shows Dead Heat
A Marquette Law School poll released Thursday found Wisconsin’s governor race tied at 44 percent between Republican Tom Tiffany and Democrat David Crowley, with seventy days left before the election. The poll, which surveyed 891 registered voters, found Republicans more enthusiastic about voting than Democrats, though the gap narrowed among likely voters. Tiffany held a slight edge in favorability, with 39 percent viewing him positively compared with 33 percent for Crowley, while more voters said they had not heard of Crowley. The survey also found voters viewed the Republican Party more favorably than the Democratic Party overall statewide. The margin of error was four points. 14
Ossoff Blasts Collins Over Staffer’s Racist Posts
Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff on Thursday condemned a former staffer for his Republican opponent, Representative Mike Collins, after reports surfaced that the ex-aide posted swastika and Ku Klux Klan imagery online. The Washington Post reported that Preston Parra, who interned for Collins in 2024 and later worked as a contractor for his political committee, shared the images in June and July, along with repeated use of a racial slur. Ossoff called the posts “disgraceful and disqualifying” and said they reflected a pattern of ties between Collins and white nationalist ideology. Collins spokesperson Meyer Siegfried said Parra has no affiliation with the campaign and condemned the posts. 8, 9
