Judge Lets Trump End Ethiopian Deportation Protections
A federal judge in Boston ruled Tuesday that the Trump administration can end deportation protections for more than 5,000 Ethiopians living in the United States. U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy lifted the last remaining court order blocking the Department of Homeland Security from terminating Temporary Protected Status for Ethiopian nationals. The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling in June that limited how much federal courts can review the administration’s efforts to end similar protections for people from other countries. Murphy said the lead plaintiff, African Communities Together, can still pursue claims that the decision violated constitutional equal protection guarantees. 1, 2
Disney And ABC Sue FCC Over Broadcast Licenses
Disney and its ABC network sued the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday, alleging the agency’s early review of ABC’s broadcast licenses amounts to retaliation for the network’s news and entertainment programming. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., asks a judge to block the FCC from acting on the license renewals, which are not otherwise due until 2028. ABC said the commission’s demands escalated after President Trump criticized the network’s coverage and its handling of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said no decision on the licenses has been made and called Disney’s response premature. 3, 4
Appeals Court Upholds ICE Limits At Churches
A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld an order limiting immigration enforcement at houses of worship connected to Quaker, Sikh and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship congregations. A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the Trump administration’s policy allowing agents to conduct enforcement actions at religious sites likely violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The judges said the policy could reduce attendance at worship services. The ruling upholds a 2025 injunction issued by a federal judge in Maryland and applies specifically to the congregations that brought the lawsuit, not to all sensitive locations nationwide. 5, 6
Forest Service Moves To Repeal Roadless Rule
The U.S. Forest Service on Tuesday advanced a plan to repeal the 2001 roadless rule, which has protected nearly 45 million acres of undeveloped national forest land from new roads and logging for a quarter century. The proposal would open wilderness areas across the country, including nine million acres within Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, to road construction and timber harvesting. The Trump administration has pushed the agency to expand logging and forest thinning, arguing the changes will reduce wildfire risk. Environmental groups have said they expect to challenge the rule change once it is finalized later this year. 7

Nixon Wins Stunning Upset In Florida Senate Primary
Florida state Representative Angie Nixon won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, defeating retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Alex Vindman in a result widely described as a major upset. Nixon, a Jacksonville lawmaker who joined the Democratic Socialists of America during her campaign, won by roughly 11 percentage points despite raising just $975,000 compared with Vindman’s $16.3 million. She ran no television ads and instead relied on grassroots organizing across the state’s urban counties. Nixon becomes the first Black woman to win a major party Senate nomination in Florida and will face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in November for the seat vacated by Marco Rubio. 8, 9
Donalds And Jolly Win Florida Governor Primaries
Florida voters chose their party nominees for governor on Tuesday, setting up a November matchup to succeed term-limited Republican Ron DeSantis. U.S. Representative Byron Donalds, who was endorsed by President Trump, won the Republican nomination with about 48 percent of the vote in a crowded field. Former Republican congressman David Jolly, who left the party and ran as a Democrat, won that party’s nomination with about 61 percent. The two will face off in the general election on November 3. Florida voters also cast ballots in numerous congressional and state legislative primary races on the same day. 10, 11
Sullivan And Peltola Advance In Alaska Primary
Alaska voters went to the polls on Tuesday in a nonpartisan primary that will help decide control of the Senate this fall. Republican Senator Dan Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola, a former U.S. representative, both advanced to the November general election under the state’s top-four primary system. With about half of precincts reporting late Tuesday, Peltola led with roughly 46 percent of the vote and Sullivan followed closely behind. The race is considered one of the most competitive Senate contests in the country this cycle. Two additional candidates were still competing for the remaining spots on the four-person November ballot. 12, 13
Shapiro Signs Order Restricting AI Data Centers
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed an executive order on Tuesday placing new restrictions on artificial intelligence data centers built in the state. The order requires companies to meet environmental and transparency standards and to secure approval from local communities before building new facilities. It also removes data centers from the state’s fast-track permitting program and bars state agencies from signing nondisclosure agreements with developers. Shapiro said the measures are meant to prevent data center projects from driving up residents’ utility bills and to protect access to clean air and water. The order took effect immediately upon signing. 14
