US Imposes 50% Tariffs, Canada Vows Retaliation
The United States imposed 50 percent tariffs on about 20 billion dollars of Canadian goods early Saturday morning after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa collapsed. The duties took effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time, covering wine, dairy, hockey equipment and cement. United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada declined to finalize a deal reached earlier in the week. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday’s terms were unfair and questioned the reliability of any deal. Carney said Saturday that Canada will respond with matching tariffs on American steel and dairy starting September 8, deepening strain between the allies ahead of the midterms. 1, 2
Judge Strikes Down Trump’s 75-Country Visa Ban
A federal judge in Manhattan on Friday struck down a Trump administration policy that suspended immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries. United States District Judge Jeannette Vargas ruled the policy was contrary to law and exceeded the authority granted to Secretary of State Marco Rubio by statute. The policy, announced in January, paused visa adjudications for applicants from nations including Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, citing concerns some immigrants could become a public burden. Vargas found the approach conflicted with a law barring discrimination in visa issuance. The ruling vacates denials based on the policy alone. 3, 4
Trump Says He Has $850 Million For Midterms
President Trump said Friday night at a rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that his political operation has roughly 850 million dollars available heading into the midterm elections. Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s Republican Senate runoff, Trump said he plans to spend a lot of that money on candidates he favors. He added that the sum is separate from other funds raised through his broader political network. Trump appeared alongside Senator Darline Graham, who is seeking a full term after being appointed to fill the seat of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, as Republicans defend narrow majorities. 5
USPS Publishes Final Rule On Mail Ballots
The United States Postal Service on Friday published a finalized rule tightening mail-in voting requirements ahead of the November midterm elections, even though the underlying policy remains blocked by federal courts. The rule would require states to share voter data and apply serialized barcodes to mail ballots before the Postal Service delivers them. Officials said they issued the rule now so it could take effect quickly if the Supreme Court lifts existing injunctions against President Trump’s March executive order on mail voting. The rule will be formally published on August 26, but the agency said it will take no action to implement it this year. 6, 7
Appeals Court Blocks DOJ Subpoenas On James
A federal appeals court ruled Friday the Justice Department cannot enforce subpoenas targeting New York Attorney General Letitia James, finding the prosecutor who issued them served unlawfully. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld, 2 to 1, a lower ruling barring John Sarcone from the case, finding him unlawfully installed as a top federal prosecutor. The subpoenas, issued in August 2025, sought records tied to lawsuits James brought against Trump, his family business and the National Rifle Association. It marked the third time an appeals court rejected the administration’s attempt to bypass Senate confirmation for U.S. Attorneys. The department has not said whether it will appeal. 8

Newsom Signs Stop Nick Shirley Act Into Law
Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed the Stop Nick Shirley Act into law Saturday, expanding the state’s Safe at Home address confidentiality program to nonprofit employees who serve immigrants. The bill, Assembly Bill 2624, came days after a self-described independent journalist disrupted a Capitol interview and attacked an immigrant advocate personally. Supporters said the program will let more nonprofit workers keep addresses out of public records to protect them from harassment tied to their work. Critics, including conservative commentators, argued the measure could shield people from scrutiny over their conduct. The confidentiality protections take effect October 1, 2027, giving agencies time to update enrollment procedures. 9
Sanders Declares Emergency Over Arkansas Wildfires
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas declared a state of emergency Friday in response to wildfires burning across southern Arkansas, and crews continued battling the blaze into Saturday. The largest fire, in Union County, has burned nearly 2,000 acres since starting Thursday night, prompting the evacuation of about 150 residents. Sanders directed 250,000 dollars from the state’s Disaster Response and Recovery Fund to support firefighting efforts and authorized deployment of two Black Hawk helicopters for water drops. On Saturday, officials said fire lines had been established around the fire’s entire perimeter, though voluntary evacuations remained in place nearby. 10
Green Requests Federal Emergency Aid For Hawaii
Governor Josh Green of Hawaii on Saturday formally asked the White House to issue a presidential emergency declaration for the state following Hurricane Lala, which struck earlier this month. The request covers Hawaii County, Maui County and the City and County of Honolulu, seeking federal assistance to protect public health and maintain essential services. Green said he has been in direct contact with the White House and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to press for urgent aid. The request seeks deployment of federal disaster response teams and emergency generators to help restore power in hard-hit areas as Tropical Storm Moke approaches the islands. 11
