Missouri Officials Ask Justices To Save Map
Missouri’s attorney general and secretary of state filed an emergency application with the U.S. Supreme Court late Friday night, asking justices to block a state court ruling that would force Missouri to abandon its Republican drawn congressional map before November. The filing, directed to Justice Brett Kavanaugh, argues the ruling creates confusion so close to an election, with a state deadline of Tuesday to finalize ballots. Kavanaugh gave opponents of the map until noon Monday to respond. The dispute began Thursday when Missouri’s high court ordered a November referendum on the map, siding with critics who said it unlawfully favored Republicans. 3
Trump Removes White House Shrouds For Xi Visit
Workers on Saturday removed drapes shrouding the White House’s North Portico as Trump prepared to show off renovation work before a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month. Crews had spent about two months repairing the portico’s tall white columns and fortifying the entrance beneath the coverings. Trump has closely overseen renovations to the executive mansion this year, including changes to its columns, and had ordered the work completed before Xi’s arrival. The White House has not detailed the full cost of the project. The visit, expected September 24, is likely to focus on trade issues between Washington and Beijing amid tensions over tariffs. 4
Agencies Issue Birthright Citizenship Guidance
Federal agencies moved Saturday to publish implementation guidance for President Trump’s August executive order narrowing birthright citizenship, meeting a 30 day deadline set by the order. The Department of Homeland Security had already issued a rule this week letting certain children of foreign government employees register for permanent residency instead of automatic citizenship. The State Department has proposed requiring parents seeking passports for their children to prove their own citizenship or immigration status. Newsom Campaigns With North Carolina Democrats
California Governor Gavin Newsom joined North Carolina Democrats in Charlotte on Saturday morning, knocking on doors alongside volunteers supporting Senate candidate Roy Cooper and Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls ahead of November’s midterms. Newsom later traveled to Monroe for a Labor Day rally with Democratic Party Chair Anderson Clayton and other candidates. The stops were part of a four day tour through Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina focused on voting rights and redistricting. Organizers described the canvass as an effort to elect Cooper, Earls and other Democrats by talking directly with voters ahead of a competitive Senate race that could decide control of the chamber. 7
Idaho Court Orders New Abortion Ballot Language
The Idaho Supreme Court ruled Friday that state officials must rewrite the explanations appearing on November ballots describing the effects of a proposed abortion rights initiative, setting a Saturday deadline for revised language. Justices found that neither the “yes” nor “no” statements drafted by the attorney general and secretary of state met legal requirements for clarity. Justice Gregory Moeller wrote that a statement is not clear if it leaves voters uncertain about a legal consequence of their vote. The court lacks authority to write the language itself, and officials were racing to meet the timeline before ballots go out to military and overseas voters. 8
Florida Democrats Escalate Push To Impeach Uthmeier
Florida House Democrats said Saturday they would continue pressing for impeachment proceedings against Attorney General James Uthmeier, following a grand jury report that found the DeSantis administration misappropriated 10 million dollars in Medicaid settlement funds for political purposes. Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell said the findings showed a misuse of taxpayer money by Republican officials, even though the panel said it lacked sufficient evidence to bring criminal charges. Uthmeier has called the investigation a politically motivated hoax and said Florida law bars him from discussing grand jury proceedings. Governor Ron DeSantis has defended the settlement as legally sound and blamed the disclosure on an illegal leak. 9
