Iran Seizes Two Ships After Trump Extends Ceasefire
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard seized two commercial container ships in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, the first such seizures since the war began in February, just hours after President Trump extended the ceasefire indefinitely at Pakistan’s request. Iran said both vessels, the MSC Francesca and the Epaminondas, were operating without proper permits and manipulating their navigation systems. The seizures came as the Strait’s daily traffic has dropped from roughly 130 ships to a handful, and peace talks remain stalled with no Iranian delegation yet dispatched to Islamabad.1, 2, 3
Navy Secretary Phelan Fired Amid Wartime Pentagon Shake-Up
Secretary of the Navy John Phelan was fired on Wednesday by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, effective immediately, making him the first service secretary dismissed under Trump’s second term. Sources told Reuters and CNN that Phelan clashed with Hegseth and Deputy Secretary Stephen Feinberg over the pace of shipbuilding reform and the administration’s push to build a new “Golden Fleet.” Navy Undersecretary Hung Cao will serve as acting secretary.4, 5, 6
Senate Votes Through Night on $70B ICE Funding Plan
The Senate held a marathon “vote-a-rama” into the early hours of Thursday, working through dozens of Democratic amendments to a Republican budget resolution that would provide $70 billion to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Patrol for 3.5 years through budget reconciliation. Democrats, who lack the votes to block the measure, offered amendments focused on enforcement safeguards and cost-of-living concerns. A final Senate vote is expected Thursday before the bill moves to the House.7, 8
Congress Hits Record-High 86% Disapproval Rating
A new Gallup poll released Wednesday found that 86 percent of Americans disapprove of Congress, matching the highest level recorded in more than 50 years of tracking. Just 10 percent approve, one point above the all-time low of 9 percent set in 2013. Gallup noted that three of the five times disapproval has hit 86 percent have coincided with a government shutdown, and Republicans account for much of the recent decline in confidence.9, 10
White House Ballroom Contract Shields Anonymous Donors
Documents obtained by The Washington Post and Public Citizen and released Wednesday reveal that the Trump administration’s $400 million White House East Wing ballroom project allows donors to contribute anonymously while excluding the White House itself from conflict-of-interest safeguards. The contract, signed in October 2025 between the White House, the National Park Service, and the Trust for the National Mall, was made public only after a court ordered its disclosure. Senate Democrats called the arrangement a “shady scheme” and have introduced legislation to ban anonymous donations for White House construction projects.11, 12, 13
GOP Faces Mounting Midterm Anxiety as Agenda Stalls
A New York Times analysis published Wednesday found that congressional Republicans are deeply worried heading into the 2026 midterms, bogged down in internal disputes over surveillance law, housing legislation, and the DHS funding fight, with six months remaining before November elections that could determine control of both chambers. A Politico report the same day revealed White House political aides met Wednesday with disgruntled Republican allies, trying to repair relationships with key 2024 coalition groups frustrated by the ongoing Iran war and stalled cost-of-living agenda.14, 15

California Governor Debate Puts Crowded Field on Display
Six candidates vying to lead California faced off Wednesday night in a debate hosted by Nexstar Media, the first major televised confrontation since former Rep. Eric Swalwell resigned from the race this month following sexual assault allegations. Two Republicans, conservative commentator Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, debated alongside four Democrats: former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, businessman Tom Steyer, former Rep. Katie Porter, and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. The state’s top-two jungle primary is set for June 2.16, 17
Florida Redistricting Session Looms as Legal Fights Mount
Florida’s special legislative session on mid-decade congressional redistricting is now set to begin April 28 through May 1, after Governor Ron DeSantis delayed it from its original April 20 start date while awaiting a pending U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais on Voting Rights Act standards. Republicans are eyeing a new map that could produce up to five additional GOP-leaning seats, though House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries warned Wednesday that the plan is illegal, and several legal challenges are already being prepared.18, 19
