Armed Suspect Storms Correspondents’ Dinner; Trump Safe
A 31-year-old California man, Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, rushed a security checkpoint armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives outside the Washington Hilton on Saturday, where President Trump was attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. A Secret Service agent was shot but protected by body armor; Trump, Vice President Vance, and Cabinet members were all safely evacuated. Allen told police he intended to target Trump administration officials. Trump held a late-night press conference at the White House and said the event would be rescheduled within 30 days.1, 2, 3
Trump Cancels Iran Peace Talks: ‘We Have All the Cards’
President Trump on Saturday abruptly canceled a planned trip by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan for talks with Iran, saying the Iranian regime was experiencing “tremendous infighting” and its latest proposal was not good enough. Trump told reporters at Palm Beach International Airport that Iran submitted a “much better” new paper within ten minutes of his cancellation. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had already landed in Islamabad before Trump pulled out, and the White House said Iran can simply call if it wants to talk.4, 5, 6
May 1 War Powers Deadline Puts Congress in the Spotlight
The Iran conflict is approaching the 60-day limit set by the 1973 War Powers Resolution, with legal analysts on Saturday placing the hard deadline as early as April 29 and no later than May 1, by which point Trump must obtain congressional authorization or begin withdrawing U.S. forces. Congress has not passed an Authorization for Use of Military Force, and the Senate blocked a war powers resolution for the fifth time this past week. Republican senators Susan Collins and Thom Tillis both signaled Saturday they may break with the administration if no congressional vote occurs.7, 8
Trump Hosts Crypto Investors at Mar-a-Lago, Drawing Ethics Fire
President Trump on Saturday hosted a gala luncheon at Mar-a-Lago for the top 297 holders of his $TRUMP meme coin, with the leading 29 investors receiving a private VIP reception before he left for the Correspondents’ Dinner. Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren, Adam Schiff, and Richard Blumenthal called it an unprecedented “pay-to-play” scheme that blurs the line between the presidency and Trump’s personal financial interests. The $TRUMP coin has declined 96 percent from its peak while the Trump family has reportedly generated over $1 billion from crypto ventures.9, 10

New York AG Sues Trump Over $73M in Withheld Highway Funds
New York Attorney General Letitia James filed suit on Friday against the Trump administration to block the cancellation of more than $73 million in federal highway funding, after the U.S. Department of Transportation cut the money because New York refused to rescind commercial driver’s licenses the federal government claimed were issued unlawfully. James argued the licenses complied fully with both state and federal law and were granted only to individuals with legal immigration status. The administration separately threatened to withhold an additional $147 million in future highway aid, a move James said would disrupt critical road and bridge projects across the state.11, 12
Virginia Redistricting Court Battle Escalates After Ruling Block
Attorney General Jay Jones confirmed on Saturday that Virginia will appeal a circuit court judge’s April 22 ruling that permanently blocked certification of the redistricting referendum results and declared the authorizing legislation void. The referendum, passed by voters on April 21, could have flipped up to four U.S. House seats from Republican to Democrat. The case is expected to proceed rapidly through the Court of Appeals of Virginia with the November midterms drawing closer.13, 14
NYC Mayor Mamdani Issues First Veto, Splits City Council
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Friday issued his first mayoral veto, rejecting a City Council bill that would have required the NYPD to establish formal buffer zone security perimeters around schools during protests. Mamdani said the bill threatened the free speech rights of union organizers and immigration protesters, while Council Speaker Julie Menin called the veto a failure to protect students. The bill passed 30 to 19, four votes short of the 34 needed to override, leaving its fate uncertain.15, 16
Texas Democrats Set Houston Runoff; Incumbents on Shaky Ground
The first federal midterm primaries of 2026 produced a significant result on Saturday as Democratic Reps. Al Green and Christian Menefee advanced to a May 26 runoff for a Houston-area congressional district, a race triggered by redistricting and reflecting broader incumbent vulnerability heading into November. Political analysts said the results signal that incumbents across both parties face tougher-than-expected challenges this cycle, with voter frustration over the Iran war and cost-of-living concerns driving anti-incumbent sentiment nationwide.17, 18
