Trump Launches “Project Freedom” to Guide Hormuz Ships Starting Today
President Trump announced on Sunday that the United States would begin guiding stranded “neutral and innocent” ships out of the blocked Strait of Hormuz starting this Monday, dubbing the mission “Project Freedom” and calling it a humanitarian gesture for nations that “have done absolutely nothing wrong.” Trump said countries from across the world had requested American assistance navigating the congested waterway. Iran’s military immediately warned that any U.S. forces entering the strait would be attacked, calling the move a ceasefire violation. Trump simultaneously cited “very positive discussions” underway with Iran.1, 2, 3
Iran’s 14-Point Peace Plan Goes Public; Trump Calls It “Not Acceptable”
Iran officially confirmed on Sunday that it had submitted a 14-point peace proposal to the United States through Pakistani intermediaries, and that it had received a U.S. response. The plan calls for a 30-day window to finalize an agreement, the removal of the U.S. naval blockade, the unfreezing of Iranian assets, and reparations for war damages. Trump said he had “not yet” reviewed the exact wording but expressed deep skepticism, saying Iran had “not yet paid a big enough price.” Iran’s nuclear program remains the central sticking point, as Washington insists on limitations before the conflict can end.4, 5
Poll: Trump Hits Record 62% Disapproval as Midterms Enter Final Stretch
A new Washington Post–ABC News–Ipsos poll released Sunday puts President Trump’s approval rating at 37 percent, while his disapproval has climbed to 62 percent, the highest mark across either presidential term. Two-thirds of Americans say the country is headed in the wrong direction, and 76 percent disapprove of Trump’s handling of the cost of living. Democrats now lead Republicans by 5 points on the generic midterm congressional ballot. Democratic voter enthusiasm is also significantly higher, with 73 percent of Democrats saying they are certain to vote compared to 52 percent of Republicans. Senate control is now a near toss-up, with Republican odds falling from 67 percent at the start of 2026 to roughly 51 percent.6, 7
Congress Returns Today; War Powers Vote and Redistricting Battles Loom
Congress returns Monday from a weeklong recess, stepping into a crowded political calendar. Democrats have pledged to force repeated votes on war powers resolutions, arguing that President Trump failed to obtain congressional authorization for the Iran conflict before the 60-day War Powers Resolution deadline lapsed last week. Senate Minority Leader Schumer is expected to push for those votes as early as this week. The national redistricting wave triggered by the Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act ruling will also dominate congressional debate in the days ahead.8, 9

Alabama Redistricting Session Now Open; New Map Could Add GOP Seat
Alabama’s special legislative session opened Monday afternoon in Montgomery, with Republican lawmakers positioned to redraw the state’s congressional map following the Supreme Court’s ruling last week that narrowed the Voting Rights Act. Governor Kay Ivey called the session with the goal of reverting to an earlier map that would reduce Alabama’s majority-Black congressional representation and potentially deliver an additional Republican seat. Legal challenges are expected the moment any new map is formally adopted.10, 11
Louisiana Lawmakers Draw New Maps as May 16 Primary Hangs in Balance
Louisiana’s special redistricting session moved forward Sunday as lawmakers worked to produce a new congressional map after the Supreme Court struck down the state’s two majority-Black districts last week. Governor Jeff Landry had suspended the May 16 congressional primary to allow time for the redistricting process. The new map is expected to eliminate one of the two Democratic-leaning districts, reversing a court-ordered addition that had been in place for the 2024 election.12, 13
Tennessee Session Opens Tomorrow; Memphis Congressional Seat at Stake
Tennessee’s special legislative session opens Tuesday in Nashville, with Republican lawmakers ready to redraw the state’s congressional map and target the Memphis-based 9th Congressional District, the state’s only Democratic-held seat. Democratic incumbent Rep. Steve Cohen and state Representative Justin Pearson have already begun their 2026 campaigns under the current lines, but redistricting would force them to start over with new qualifying signatures. Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers and are expected to act quickly.14, 15
