Trump Pauses Project Freedom, Citing Iran Deal Progress
President Trump announced Tuesday evening that he is pausing “Project Freedom,” the U.S. military operation to escort commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, just one day after it launched. In a Truth Social post, Trump said he was suspending the escort mission “for a short period” to allow diplomatic efforts to finalize a peace agreement with Iran. Secretary of State Rubio earlier insisted the ceasefire was still holding, though Iran had fired on U.S. warships and UAE oil infrastructure. Stock futures rose on news of the pause, reflecting market optimism that a deal may be near. 1, 2, 3
Senate GOP Unveils $72B Bill: ICE Funding and Ballroom Cash
Senate Republicans on Tuesday released a $72 billion budget reconciliation bill that would fund ICE and Customs and Border Protection through 2029, bypassing the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold. Buried inside the legislation is $1 billion earmarked for Secret Service security upgrades tied directly to President Trump’s East Wing Modernization project, which includes a new White House ballroom estimated to cost $400 million. Democrats immediately condemned the bill, arguing taxpayers should not fund a presidential ballroom. Republicans countered that all funds are restricted to security-related expenditures. 4, 5, 6
Supreme Court Weighs Future of Abortion Pill After Alito Stay
The full Supreme Court was set to act Tuesday on whether to extend Justice Samuel Alito’s one-week stay that temporarily restored mail and telehealth access to the abortion pill mifepristone. Alito’s order, issued Monday, blocked a Fifth Circuit ruling that had imposed a nationwide ban on telemedicine prescriptions and mail delivery. Manufacturers Danco and GenBioPro filed emergency briefs by Thursday’s deadline. The court’s next move will determine whether millions of women retain access to the drug as the battle heads back to the full court. 7, 8, 9
Ohio and Indiana Primaries Test Trump’s Grip on His Party
Voters in Ohio and Indiana went to the polls Tuesday in primaries that served as a live test of President Trump’s dominance over the Republican Party. In Ohio, Vivek Ramaswamy easily won the GOP gubernatorial nomination with Trump’s backing; he will face Democrat Amy Acton in the fall. Former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown won the Ohio Senate Democratic primary and will challenge incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted in what is expected to be one of the most expensive Senate races of the year. In Indiana, Trump-backed challengers ousted a majority of Republican state senators who had blocked his redistricting push. 10, 11, 12
House Ethics Probe Expands: Fourth Congressman Faces Charges
The House Ethics Committee confirmed Tuesday it is moving forward with a formal investigation of Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) on allegations ranging from sexual misconduct and domestic violence to campaign finance violations and profiting from federal contracts while in office. Mills is now at least the fourth member of Congress facing serious Ethics Committee action in recent weeks, following the resignations of Representatives Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Tony Gonzales (R-TX) amid sexual misconduct allegations, and the earlier resignation of Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) over 25 ethics violations. 13, 14

Tennessee Special Session Clashes Over Memphis District
Tennessee’s special legislative session to redraw congressional maps moved into open conflict on Tuesday as Democrats loudly objected on the floor of the statehouse. The Republican-controlled Senate advanced procedural steps setting the stage to carve up the Memphis-based 9th Congressional District, the state’s only Democratic-held House seat, into pieces that would produce an all-Republican delegation before the November midterms. Democrats argued that state law prohibits mid-decade redistricting and that the plan would dilute the voting power of Memphis’s majority-Black population. Legal challenges are expected as soon as a new map is adopted. 15, 16
Alabama Asks Court to Lift Injunction Blocking New Map
Alabama’s Republican Attorney General Steve Marshall on Tuesday filed an emergency motion asking a federal court to lift an existing injunction that bars the state from redrawing its congressional maps before 2030. The motion directly cites last week’s Supreme Court ruling that gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, which Marshall argues removes the legal foundation for the injunction. Protesters entered the Alabama Statehouse on Monday before the chamber adjourned the special session, demonstrating against a GOP plan that would reduce Black voting representation. The federal court has not yet set a hearing date. 17, 18
Michigan Senate Special Election Decides Chamber Control
Michigan voters went to the polls Tuesday in a special state Senate election to fill a vacant seat, with control of the chamber hanging in the balance. Republicans and Democrats each held 19 seats heading into the race, making the outcome decisive for the remainder of the legislative session. Control of the Michigan Senate determines which party can advance or block major legislation, including budget bills and policy priorities tied to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s agenda. 19, 20
