U.S. Strikes Iran Even as Peace Talks Continue
The U.S. military conducted what it called ‘self-defense strikes’ on Monday against Iranian missile launch sites and vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, just hours after President Trump said a peace deal was taking shape. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed it shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone and engaged an F-35 fighter jet that it said violated Iranian airspace. Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused the United States of ‘numerous instances of naval harassment against Iranian commercial ships’ and warned of a decisive response to any further aggression. 1, 2
Iran: Deal ‘Not Imminent’ Despite Trump’s Claims
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told reporters on Monday that while conclusions had been reached on ‘a large number’ of topics in the proposed memorandum of understanding, no agreement is close to being signed. He stated that the current negotiations are focused entirely on ending hostilities and that nuclear issues are not yet part of the discussions. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, traveling in India on Monday, acknowledged significant gaps remain, saying the two sides could not resolve a nuclear deal ‘on the back of a napkin.’ 3, 4, 5
Trump Honors Fallen Troops at Arlington on Memorial Day
President Trump participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday and addressed a Memorial Day observance at the Memorial Amphitheater. In his remarks, Trump paid tribute to the 13 service members killed during Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. military campaign against Iran, calling them ‘remarkable individuals’ who sacrificed their lives to keep nuclear weapons from Iran. He also noted the approaching 250th anniversary of American independence, saying ‘there can be no 4th of July’ without the sacrifices of the armed forces. 6, 7
Brennan Center CEO: Trump Moves Are ‘Epic Corruption’
In an NPR interview broadcast on Monday, Michael Waldman, president of the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan legal think tank, described a series of recent Trump administration actions as ‘epic corruption in plain sight.’ Waldman cited the nearly $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund, the immunity granted to Trump and his family from IRS enforcement, and the disclosure of more than 3,600 stock trades made in Trump’s name in the first quarter of 2026. The White House disputed the characterization, saying Trump ‘acts solely in the best interest of the public.’ 8, 9
Congress Back Tuesday; June 1 Immigration Deadline Looms
The Senate convened for a pro forma session on Tuesday following the Memorial Day recess, with the full chamber returning on June 1 to face a packed and high-stakes legislative agenda. Topping the list is the $72 billion immigration enforcement reconciliation bill, which President Trump set a June 1 deadline for passing. Senate Majority Leader John Thune acknowledged the chamber will ‘pick up where we left off,’ though key provisions were struck down by the Senate parliamentarian before the recess and will need to be reworked. 10, 11
‘The Stupid Stuff Is Killing Our Chances,’ GOP Senators Warn
The New York Times reported on Sunday that Republican senators returned to their home states after the Memorial Day recess in open frustration over President Trump’s recent behavior, including his endorsement of Ken Paxton against fellow Republican Sen. John Cornyn in Tuesday’s Texas runoff and his push for the $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund. ‘The stupid stuff is killing our chances,’ one retiring Republican senator told the Times. A senior GOP Senate aide was more blunt, saying ‘all 53 Republican senators are unhappy right now.’ With five months until the midterms and their Senate majority at risk, many in the party fear Trump is prioritizing personal vendettas over the party’s November prospects. 12, 13

Texas Votes Today in Blockbuster Senate Runoff
Texas Republicans headed to the polls on Tuesday in the most-watched primary runoff of the 2026 cycle, choosing between incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton for the Republican Senate nomination. President Trump endorsed Paxton, drawing criticism from Senate Republican leaders who have largely backed Cornyn. A University of Houston poll from early May showed Paxton leading 48% to 45%, though the margin was within the margin of error. The winner faces Democratic nominee state Representative James Talarico in the November general election. 14, 15
