Trump Sends Witkoff and Kushner to Pakistan for Iran Talks
The White House announced Friday that U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will travel to Pakistan on Saturday to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in Islamabad on Friday. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president sent the delegation “to hear the Iranians out,” adding that “we’ve certainly seen some progress from the Iranian side.” Iran’s spokesperson denied a direct meeting was formally planned, but both sides confirmed the encounter is taking shape. 1, 2, 3
War Powers Deadline Looms as Iran Conflict Enters Day 60
Friday marked the approach of the critical May 1 deadline under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which requires President Trump to obtain congressional authorization or begin withdrawing U.S. forces from Iran within 60 days of notifying Congress of hostilities. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated Friday that the U.S. naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz will last “as long as it takes.” Congress has not yet passed an Authorization for Use of Military Force, leaving the administration’s legal standing in question. 4, 5
DOJ Drops Criminal Probe of Fed Chair Jerome Powell
The Justice Department announced Friday it is ending its criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell over cost overruns at the Fed’s Washington headquarters renovation. U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said the matter will now be handled by the Fed’s inspector general. The decision clears a significant obstacle for the Senate confirmation of Kevin Warsh, Trump’s nominee to replace Powell, whose term expires May 15. 6, 7
DOJ Authorizes Firing Squads for Federal Executions
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Friday signed a directive expanding federal execution methods to include firing squads, electrocution, and gas asphyxiation, in addition to reinstating lethal injection with pentobarbital used during Trump’s first term. The Justice Department said the expansion is intended to address ongoing drug-supply challenges for lethal injections and to expedite capital punishment cases. The federal government has not historically used firing squads; five states currently permit the method. 8, 9
Appeals Court Strikes Down Trump Asylum Ban at Southern Border
A divided three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled Friday that President Trump’s January 2025 executive order barring migrants from claiming asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border is unlawful. The court held that Trump cannot use emergency entry powers to override the immigration statutes passed by Congress. The ruling sets up a likely showdown at the Supreme Court, as the Trump administration is expected to appeal. 10, 11
Judge Questions Trump’s $10B Lawsuit Against His Own IRS
A federal judge on Friday questioned whether President Trump can legally sue the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department, both agencies he controls, in his $10 billion lawsuit over the leak of his tax returns. Judge Kathleen Williams expressed concern that the two sides in the case are not “sufficiently adverse” to establish court jurisdiction and ordered a hearing on the matter for May 27. Trump and his sons filed the suit in January over a contractor’s unauthorized disclosure of his tax records. 12, 13

North Carolina Democrat Quits Party After Primary Loss
State Rep. Carla Cunningham, who has represented north Charlotte’s District 106 as a Democrat for seven terms, announced Friday that she has switched her voter registration to unaffiliated. Cunningham, who lost her March primary by a wide margin after crossing party lines to help override Democratic Governor Josh Stein’s veto of an immigration cooperation bill, said she “came to realize that I want to serve the people, not a party.” The switch is significant because Republicans may now need only one additional vote to reach a veto-override supermajority in the state House. 14, 15
White House Blames Youngkin for Virginia Redistricting Loss
Senior White House officials told Politico on Friday that they hold former Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin responsible for Democrats’ redistricting victory this week, saying he “should have done more” and that his decision to leave a special session open allowed state Senate Democrats to ram through the new congressional maps. A Virginia circuit court judge blocked certification of the referendum results on Wednesday, but Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones said Friday the state will appeal, keeping the fight alive ahead of November midterms. 16, 17
