US-Iran Ceasefire Extension Deal Reached, Awaits Trump Approval
American and Iranian negotiators reached a tentative memorandum of understanding on Thursday to extend the ceasefire by 60 days and begin talks on Iran’s nuclear program, according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter. The draft agreement would also address the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, freeing the passage of commercial shipping without fees or restrictions. President Trump has been briefed on the details but has not yet signed off on the emerging deal, and Iran has not publicly confirmed any agreement. 1, 2, 3
DOJ Sues Four States Over Undercover Plates for ICE Agents
The Justice Department filed lawsuits on Wednesday against Maine, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Washington, alleging the states are unconstitutionally denying confidential license plates to federal immigration agents while continuing to issue them to state and local law enforcement. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the policies put agents’ safety at risk, enable suspects to track and evade law enforcement, and violate the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause. Each state had previously declined to reverse its policy after receiving a May 12 letter from the DOJ warning of its illegality. 4, 5, 6
Trump Stock Trades Fuel Corruption Accusations
PBS NewsHour reported Thursday that President Trump’s trust executed more than 3,700 individual stock trades in the first quarter of 2026, totaling an estimated $220 million to $750 million in transactions, an unprecedented level of trading for a sitting president. Critics noted that the timing of certain trades appeared to coincide with Trump’s public statements or policy decisions affecting those companies, including purchases of energy and defense stocks during ceasefire negotiations with Iran. The Trump Organization maintains that independent third-party financial managers execute the trades automatically, with no direction from the president or his family. 7, 8, 9
Treasury Designs $250 Bill Featuring Trump, Awaits Congress
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed Thursday that his department has already designed a $250 bill featuring President Trump’s image, in anticipation of proposed legislation that would create an exception to the federal law barring any living person from appearing on U.S. currency. Bessent said authorizing the bill is entirely Congress’s decision, emphasizing that the Treasury “will stick to the law.” The legislation, introduced by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), faces an uphill path in the Senate, where Republicans would need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. 10, 11, 12

Michigan Democrats Clash in Fiery Senate Primary Debate
The three Democratic candidates vying for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat held their first statewide televised debate on Thursday at the Mackinac Policy Conference, with progressive Abdul El-Sayed repeatedly targeting rivals Rep. Haley Stevens and state Sen. Mallory McMorrow over corporate campaign donations. The seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters is considered a must-win for Democrats hoping to reclaim the Senate majority in November. The winner of the August 4 primary will face Republican Mike Rogers, who has no primary opposition after the Michigan Board of State Canvassers ruled a challenger off the ballot Thursday for insufficient signatures. 13, 14, 15
California Governor’s Race Tightens Before Tuesday’s Primary
A new Public Policy Institute of California poll released Thursday shows Democrat Xavier Becerra leading the field at 23 percent of likely voters, followed by Republican Steve Hilton at 20 percent and Democrat Tom Steyer at 15 percent, just four days before the June 2 primary. All candidates, regardless of party, compete in a single first round, with the top two advancing to November. Democrats are closely watching whether Becerra and Steyer together can avoid the scenario in which two Republicans finish at the top and lock the party out of the general election. 16, 17
Newsom Awards $80M in Security Grants After Mosque Shooting
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that the state is awarding $80 million to 343 nonprofit and faith-based organizations to fund security upgrades, following the May 18 hate-crime shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego that killed three people. The grants, administered through the California Nonprofit Security Grant Program, fund security cameras, reinforced doors, alarm systems, and emergency preparedness enhancements at mosques, synagogues, churches, and other high-risk nonprofits. Newsom also included an additional $40 million for the program in his May revised state budget proposal. 18, 19
