Bill Cassidy Ousted in Louisiana Senate Primary
Senator Bill Cassidy, one of seven Republicans who voted to convict President Trump after January 6, was eliminated Saturday in Louisiana’s Republican primary. Rep. Julia Letlow, running with Trump’s endorsement, finished first, and MAGA-aligned state Treasurer John Fleming came in second. The two will meet in a June 27 runoff. Cassidy, who served two terms, offered a concession speech Saturday emphasizing the importance of democracy. 1, 2, 3
Trump Uses Taiwan Arms as Bargaining Chip with China
In a Fox News interview aired Saturday after his return from Beijing, President Trump described a stalled $14 billion U.S. arms package for Taiwan as “a very good negotiating chip” with China, saying he was holding approval “in abeyance” depending on Chinese concessions. Trump told reporters he made no commitment to President Xi about defending Taiwan, though Xi asked him directly and he declined to answer. Taiwan’s presidential office responded Saturday by reaffirming that U.S. arms sales are mandated by law and that U.S. policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged. 4, 5, 6
Ballroom Funding Blocked; Senate GOP Bill Hit Again
Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled Saturday that the $1 billion security provision tied to President Trump’s proposed White House ballroom does not comply with budget reconciliation rules and requires 60 votes to pass. The ruling, announced by Senate Democrats, delivers another blow to Republicans’ $72 billion immigration enforcement bill, already weakened by earlier parliamentary strikes. With Democrats unanimously opposed, the 60-vote threshold makes the ballroom funding effectively dead. 7, 8, 9
Bipartisan Anger Over Hegseth’s Surprise Troop Cut in Poland
Republican and Democratic lawmakers continued pressing the Pentagon on Saturday after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth abruptly canceled the deployment of 4,000 Army troops to Poland as part of a broader 5,000-troop European drawdown. Republican Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska said Poland was “blindsided” and called the move “reprehensible.” House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers added that Congress was not consulted as required by law. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he received assurances the decision was logistical. 10, 11
DOJ’s $1.776B Fund for Trump Allies Faces Judicial Scrutiny
The Justice Department’s plan to create a $1.776 billion fund to compensate people who allege they were targeted by the Biden administration faced increased judicial pressure on Saturday. Federal Judge Kathleen Williams has ordered both the DOJ and Trump’s legal team to file briefs by May 20 explaining how the parties represent genuinely opposing interests when the president controls both sides of the lawsuit against his own IRS. Democrats have labeled the fund an unprecedented taxpayer-financed political “slush fund.” 12, 13

S.C. Special Session Ends Day One With No Map Vote
South Carolina lawmakers closed their first day of a redistricting special session Saturday without voting on a new congressional map, leaving unresolved whether the state’s June 9 primary will be delayed to August. Republican Senator Tom Davis reaffirmed his opposition to the proposed map, and Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey warned that the more lawmakers study it, the more questions will arise. Governor McMaster called the session after the state Senate blocked redistricting during the regular session. 14, 15
Thousands March in Alabama to Defend Black Voting Rights
Thousands of protesters gathered Saturday at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma and at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery to protest the Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which significantly weakened the Voting Rights Act. Organizers dubbed the event “All Roads Lead to the South.” The ruling has opened the door for Republican-led legislatures in Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia to redraw congressional maps that eliminate majority-Black districts before the November midterms. 16, 17
Louisiana Faces Redistricting Clock After VRA Ruling
With Saturday’s Senate primary settled and its congressional House primaries already postponed, Louisiana now faces pressure to redraw its congressional map following the Supreme Court’s ruling that the existing districts constitute an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. Voting rights advocates warn the replacement map will likely dismantle majority-Black districts. The state’s June 27 Senate runoff between Julia Letlow and John Fleming will proceed on schedule. 18, 19
