Iran Ceasefire on ‘Life Support’ as Peace Talks Collapse
President Trump on Monday declared the month-long ceasefire with Iran is “on massive life support” after he rejected Tehran’s latest peace proposal as a “piece of garbage.” Iran’s offer demanded no nuclear concessions and insisted on being treated as the war’s winner, conditions Trump dismissed outright. Trump warned he may restart military operations under “Project Freedom Plus” if talks remain deadlocked, while U.S. Central Command confirmed the ceasefire technically remains in effect. 1, 2, 3
Trump Departs Today for High-Stakes Beijing Summit
President Trump departs Tuesday for Beijing, where he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15. The visit is the first by a U.S. president to China since 2017. The agenda covers trade tariffs, China’s support for Iran, Taiwan, and AI competition. Trump is bringing a delegation of more than a dozen major U.S. corporate executives, including Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a bid to unlock investment and trade agreements. 4, 5, 6
Senate Opens Floor Debate on $72B ICE Funding Bill
The Senate returned from recess Monday and opened floor proceedings on the $72 billion budget reconciliation bill that would fund ICE and Customs and Border Protection through 2029. Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, pledged to oppose the measure, particularly a $1 billion provision for Secret Service security upgrades tied to President Trump’s White House East Wing renovation and proposed ballroom. Republicans need only 51 votes to pass the bill, with a final vote expected this week. 7, 8, 9
Supreme Court Extends Abortion Pill Access to Thursday
Justice Samuel Alito on Monday extended by three days a temporary order allowing patients to continue obtaining the abortion pill mifepristone via telehealth and mail, pushing the new deadline to Thursday. The full court is weighing whether to block a May 1 Fifth Circuit ruling that would require in-person prescriptions only. The case, brought by Louisiana, could dramatically restrict abortion access nationwide if the lower court ruling is allowed to stand. 10, 11, 12
Trump Floats ‘Dream Team’ of Vance and Rubio for 2028
At a National Police Week dinner in the White House Rose Garden on Monday, President Trump publicly tested the idea of a Vance-Rubio ticket for 2028, asking the crowd which leader they preferred. The room cheered both names, and Trump called the pairing a “dream team,” though he was careful to state he was not making a formal endorsement. Neither Vice President Vance nor Secretary of State Rubio has declared any intention to seek the presidency. 13, 14
WHCA Shooting Suspect Enters Not Guilty Plea
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, appeared in shackles before a federal judge in Washington on Monday and pleaded not guilty to all four charges arising from the April 25 White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting. The counts include attempted assassination of the president, assault on a federal officer, and two firearms offenses, the most serious of which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Allen’s defense team also moved to disqualify Attorney General Pam Bondi and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro from the case, citing their presence at the dinner as potential targets. 15, 16

South Carolina Senate Redistricting Vote Hangs by a Thread
South Carolina’s Republican-held Senate faced a critical test Monday on whether to authorize a special session to redraw the congressional district of 17-term Democratic Representative Jim Clyburn. The chamber needed a two-thirds majority, and at least nine Republican senators were initially opposed. By Monday evening, four had flipped to “yes” while four others remained on the fence, with one senator firmly opposed. President Trump said he was “closely” watching the vote, which was expected to conclude Tuesday. 17, 18
Trump Backs Gas Tax Suspension as Prices Top $4.50 Nationally
On Monday, President Trump endorsed temporarily suspending the federal gasoline tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, responding to voter frustration over prices that have climbed roughly 50 percent since the Iran conflict began. The move requires an act of Congress, and Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri introduced bipartisan legislation that same day calling for a 90-day suspension. Analysts noted the relief would be modest, saving drivers roughly $2 per fill-up while gas prices nationally average $4.52 per gallon. 19, 20, 21
