WHCD Shooter Arraigned; Attempted Assassination Charges Loom
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, will appear Monday in Washington federal court for his arraignment on charges of using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Acting AG Todd Blanche said additional counts, including attempted assassination of the president, remain under consideration. Allen’s manifesto identified senior Trump administration officials as targets and referred to him as the “Friendly Federal Assassin.” 1, 2, 3
Trump vs. CBS: ‘60 Minutes’ Interview Turns Combative
In a Sunday night appearance on CBS News’ ‘60 Minutes,’ President Trump clashed sharply with anchor Norah O’Donnell while discussing the Correspondents’ Dinner attack. When O’Donnell read from the alleged shooter’s manifesto, Trump told her, “You’re a disgrace.” He said he was “not making it easy” for Secret Service as they evacuated him and that he wanted to see the threat firsthand. Trump called for the dinner to be rescheduled within 30 days. 4, 5
Iran Talks Stall as Foreign Minister Flies to Moscow
With U.S.-Iran peace negotiations at a standstill following Trump’s cancellation of the Pakistan summit on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi flew to Moscow on Monday to meet with Russian President Putin. Trump said Sunday that Iran knows what it needs to do to get a deal and can simply “call us.” The U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remained in place, with oil prices rising Monday morning. 6, 7
House Passes One-Week Fix, Ending 10-Week DHS Shutdown
In an early Saturday morning vote, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a one-week stop-gap spending bill that re-opens the Department of Homeland Security after a ten-week partial shutdown, the second-longest in American history. The measure gives lawmakers one more week to negotiate a long-term solution, with the Senate’s separately passed $70 billion ICE and Border Patrol reconciliation resolution still awaiting House action. Congress is set to return from recess on Monday, April 28. 8, 9
Supreme Court Hears Landmark Geofence Warrant Case
The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments Monday morning in Chatrie v. United States, a landmark Fourth Amendment case examining whether law enforcement can use “geofence warrants” to compel tech companies such as Google to disclose location data for all users within a designated area at a specific time. The case arose from a 2019 Virginia bank robbery investigation and could reshape how police use smartphone location data in millions of future criminal cases. A ruling is expected before the Court’s summer recess. 10, 11
Supreme Court Also Hears TPS Cases for 356,000 Migrants
Also Monday, the Supreme Court heard consolidated arguments in cases testing whether the Trump administration can end Temporary Protected Status for approximately 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians. Lower courts have blocked the terminations, and the Court is expected to rule before its summer recess. The administration argued the cases are identical to its earlier success in ending TPS for Venezuelans, while immigrant advocates warned that deportees would face life-threatening conditions. 12, 13

Virginia Supreme Court Weighs Redistricting Referendum
The Virginia Supreme Court heard oral arguments Sunday on the Republican challenge to the April 21 voter-approved redistricting referendum that could give Democrats four additional U.S. House seats in November. GOP plaintiffs argue the Democratic-controlled legislature violated procedural rules to place the constitutional amendment on the ballot. The current Republican-drawn map remains in effect while the court deliberates, with a ruling expected within weeks and the stakes described as among the highest of the 2026 cycle. 14, 15
House Democrats Set Barrage of Iran War Powers Votes
House Democrats announced Sunday they plan to force repeated votes on war powers resolutions throughout May and beyond, with at least six resolutions already prepared, aiming to compel Republican members in competitive districts to go on record about Congress’s authority to declare war. Representative Ro Khanna introduced a new resolution last week, followed by two more from progressive colleagues. With the War Powers Resolution’s 60-day clock ending this week, Democrats say the pressure campaign will intensify regardless of the outcome. 16, 17
