Paxton Defeats Cornyn in Blockbuster Texas Runoff
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated four-term incumbent Senator John Cornyn in Tuesday’s Republican Senate primary runoff, a result called late Tuesday night by the Associated Press. Powered by a last-minute endorsement from President Trump, Paxton overcame a roughly 10-to-1 fundraising disadvantage to win the nomination. Paxton now faces Democratic state Representative James Talarico in November, and Democrats believe the scandal-marked Paxton gives them their best shot at a Texas Senate seat since 1988. 1, 2, 3
Trump Declares Walter Reed Physical Went “Perfectly”
President Trump spent approximately three and a half hours at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Tuesday for what the White House called a semi-annual physical and dental exam, his fourth publicly disclosed medical visit since returning to office. Immediately afterward, Trump posted on social media that “everything checked out PERFECTLY,” but provided no clinical details. The White House indicated a written report from the president’s physician would be released within a day or two. Trump turns 80 on June 14. 4, 5, 6
Trump Moves to Require Federal Workers to Sign NDAs
The Office of Personnel Management posted a notice in the Federal Register on Tuesday seeking public comment on a proposed government-wide non-disclosure agreement that would cover all current and future federal employees. The proposed NDA would prohibit workers from sharing “non-public, confidential, or proprietary” government information and would remain in force even after an employee leaves federal service. Individual agencies could choose whether to participate. First Amendment attorneys and government watchdog groups immediately raised concerns about chilling effects on whistleblowers, even though the draft says it preserves existing whistleblower protections. 7, 8, 9
U.S. Strikes Iran Even as Peace Talks Inch Forward
The U.S. military conducted new strikes on Iranian missile sites near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, hours after Iran’s Foreign Ministry said negotiations remain in a “final stage” toward a memorandum of understanding. Senior U.S. officials said the Strait will remain blockaded until a deal is “finalized, certified, and signed.” Major sticking points include Iran’s nuclear stockpile and whether the Strait will reopen without Iranian-imposed tolls. No timeline for a signed agreement has been set. 10, 11, 12
House Forced Iran War Powers Vote Set for June
When the House of Representatives returns from its Memorial Day recess on June 2, Republican leaders will be required to bring a war powers resolution to the floor, after a bipartisan discharge petition gathered enough signatures before the break. GOP leadership had canceled the scheduled pre-recess vote on May 21 after it became clear the measure would likely pass. Three Republicans have already voted in favor of similar measures, and Democrats say the required vote puts additional pressure on the president to either secure a peace agreement or come to Congress for formal authorization. 13, 14

South Carolina GOP Rebukes Trump on Redistricting
The South Carolina Senate voted 26 to 18 on Tuesday to reject a mid-decade congressional redistricting plan that President Trump had personally lobbied for, dealing a notable setback to Republican efforts to eliminate the state’s only Democratic House seat held by Rep. Jim Clyburn. Fourteen Republicans joined all Democrats to block the measure during a special legislative session called under White House pressure. The rejection means South Carolina’s current district lines will remain in place for the November midterm elections, and early voting in the congressional primary already underway on Tuesday will continue as scheduled. 15, 16, 17
Federal Court Blocks Alabama’s GOP Redistricting Map
A three-judge federal panel blocked Alabama on Tuesday from implementing a Republican-drawn congressional map that would have eliminated one of the state’s two majority-Black districts and likely unseated Democratic Representative Shomari Figures. The court found “undisputed evidence” of intentional racial discrimination in the map and ordered the state to continue using the court-approved boundaries that have been in place since 2024. Republicans said they would immediately appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, which had previously allowed Alabama to proceed with its redistricting process at an earlier stage. 18, 19, 20
