Gunman Killed at White House Security Checkpoint
A man approached a White House security checkpoint on Saturday evening, pulled a handgun from his bag, and opened fire on officers. Secret Service agents returned fire and killed the suspect, who was identified as Nasire Best, 21, of Maryland. A bystander was also shot in the exchange and was transported to a hospital. President Trump was inside the White House at the time and was unharmed. It was the fourth security incident near the White House since Trump began his second term. 1, 2, 3
Trump: Iran Peace Deal ‘Largely Negotiated’
President Trump announced on Saturday that a memorandum of understanding for peace with Iran is “largely negotiated,” with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as a central element. Trump said he spent the day in calls with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Iran’s Foreign Ministry called the announcement “incomplete and inconsistent with reality,” and Fars News reported Iran intends to retain control of the Strait. Key issues, including Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and sanctions relief, remain unresolved. 4, 5, 6
Trump Overhauls Legal Green Card Process
The Trump administration announced a sweeping change requiring most foreigners already living in the United States to leave the country and apply for green cards from their home nations. The policy, issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, reverses a 50-year practice and could affect over 500,000 applicants annually, including students, temporary workers, and spouses of U.S. citizens. Returning home could also trigger 10-year reentry bans for those who overstayed their visas, a fact that legal experts say makes the policy particularly harsh for long-time residents. 7, 8, 9
DOJ Scrubs Jan. 6 Case Records from Its Website
The Department of Justice acknowledged on Saturday that it has removed from its website the news releases documenting charges, convictions, and sentences in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot cases, calling the records “partisan propaganda.” The move follows a Friday evening filing by federal prosecutors seeking to formally dismiss the most serious remaining charges, including seditious conspiracy counts, against leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. The January 6 investigation was the largest criminal inquiry in DOJ history, ultimately charging nearly 1,600 individuals. 10, 11
New Fed Chair Warsh Takes Office amid Political Tension
Kevin Warsh was sworn in on Friday at the White House as the 17th chairman of the Federal Reserve, succeeding Jerome Powell in a ceremony presided over by President Trump. Trump, who had spent years publicly pressuring Powell on interest rates, told the gathering he wants Warsh to “be totally independent.” Warsh, confirmed on a near party-line 54-45 Senate vote, pledged to lead a “reform-oriented” Fed. His first policy meeting is scheduled for June 16-17, where the probability of a rate change is currently near zero according to market indicators. 12, 13, 14
Stefanik Exits Congress, Eyes New York Governor Race
Rep. Elise Stefanik formally left Congress on Saturday after her nomination to become U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations fell through earlier this year. A Politico profile published Saturday described her departure in campaign-style terms, noting she has announced a bid to become the first Republican governor of New York since George Pataki. Stefanik was one of Trump’s most visible congressional defenders before she was nominated for the UN post. 15
