Trump Posts Iran Warning; Calls for Peace Deal
President Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday that Iran must reach a peace agreement quickly, writing that Iran’s leaders ‘better get moving, FAST’ and make a deal with the U.S. regarding their conflict. The post came after Trump’s return from a recent overseas trip during which no concrete progress was made on the Iran conflict. No White House address or formal announcement of a scheduled speech was made as of Sunday evening. 1, 2
Trump Prayer Rally Sparks Church-State Debate
Thousands gathered Sunday on the National Mall for the ‘Rededicate 250’ event, a nine-hour rally billed as a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The event featured Christian worship, Trump cabinet officials, and a pre-recorded video message from President Trump. Of the 19 religious figures scheduled to speak, 18 were Christian. Critics called it a government-promoted event that blurs the constitutional line between church and state, while supporters viewed it as a lawful expression of America’s religious heritage. 3, 4, 5
67M Voter Registrations Checked; Tens of Thousands Flagged
The AP reported Sunday that the Trump administration has run at least 67 million voter registrations through the DHS verification program known as SAVE. Of those, approximately 24,000 were flagged as potential noncitizens and about 350,000 were identified as potentially deceased. Critics and civil rights groups warn the SAVE system is error-prone, pointing to documented cases of naturalized citizens whose registrations were incorrectly suspended. At least six federal lawsuits have been filed challenging the effort. 6, 7
Senate Begins $72B Immigration Bill Markup This Week
Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security committees begin formal markup this week on the $72 billion reconciliation bill to fund ICE and Customs and Border Protection through 2029. The markup was delayed after the Senate parliamentarian last week struck down several provisions as non-compliant with reconciliation rules, including $1 billion in White House security funding tied to a proposed ballroom. Republicans are pressing to reach the Senate floor before a self-imposed June 1 deadline. 8, 9
House Bill Seeks to Extend Federal D.C. Oversight
The House passed a bill in March to extend President Trump’s federal authority over the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and D.C. governance through 2029, but the measure has not yet been taken up in the Senate. Congressional Democrats and legal scholars argue that extending federal oversight of the District beyond statutory limits requires a joint resolution and cannot be done through executive action alone. The standoff over D.C. governance continues with no Senate vote scheduled. 10, 11

S.C. Special Session Day 2: No Map Vote Yet
South Carolina lawmakers return Monday for Day 2 of a redistricting special session after closing Day 1 on Saturday without a vote on a new congressional map. The proposed map is expected to redraw the state’s 6th Congressional District, the only Democratic-held seat in the state and currently represented by Rep. Jim Clyburn. Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey warned on Saturday that the more lawmakers examine the map, the more opposition grows. 12, 13
Massie vs. Gallrein: High-Stakes Primary Tomorrow
Republican Rep. Thomas Massie faces Trump-endorsed challenger Ed Gallrein in Kentucky’s 4th District primary on Tuesday, May 19. Combined advertising spending in the race has surpassed $29 million, making it one of the most expensive House primaries in recent history. Trump has repeatedly targeted Massie on Truth Social, calling him ‘the worst Congressman in history.’ The outcome will be watched closely as a measure of Trump’s influence within the Republican Party heading into November. 14, 15, 16
Alabama’s May 19 Primaries Remain in Legal Limbo
Alabama’s May 19 congressional primaries in several districts remain uncertain after the U.S. Supreme Court last week cleared the way for the state to adopt a new congressional map designed to eliminate a majority-Black district previously protected under the Voting Rights Act. Civil rights groups have filed emergency challenges in federal court. Under a new state law, Governor Kay Ivey has authority to call special primary elections if courts approve the revised map before November. 17, 18
