GOP Set to Gain Up to 10 House Seats Through Redistricting
A Reuters analysis published Friday concludes that, with Louisiana’s new map approved the same day and two recent court rulings tilting the field sharply toward Republicans, the GOP is now on track to finish the 2026 redistricting cycle with as many as 10 more favorable House seats than Democrats. The U.S. Supreme Court’s April ruling weakening the Voting Rights Act opened the door for Southern states to dismantle majority-Black districts, while the Virginia Supreme Court separately voided a Democratic-backed congressional map. Republicans currently hold a narrow 217-to-212 House majority, and Democrats need only three additional seats to take control, making every redrawn district consequential. 1, 2, 3
Trump Meets in Situation Room; No Iran Deal Decision Yet
President Trump summoned his national security team to the White House Situation Room on Friday to make what he called a “final determination” on a proposed 60-day ceasefire extension with Iran that would also reopen the Strait of Hormuz. In a Truth Social post before the meeting, Trump outlined his demands: Iran must permanently commit to never developing a nuclear weapon, the Strait must open immediately with no tolls, and Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium must be removed and destroyed by the United States. After roughly two hours, the meeting ended without any public announcement, and Vice President Vance told reporters the outcome was “still TBD.” 4, 5, 6
Trump Signs Order to Narrow Childhood Vaccine Schedule
President Trump signed an executive order on Friday directing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to review a Department of Health and Human Services assessment on childhood vaccines and take steps to update the national vaccination schedule. The HHS report, issued in January, found that the United States recommends more childhood vaccines than any peer developed nation. A federal judge in Massachusetts had blocked an earlier administration attempt to change the schedule, and that ruling remains under appeal. 7, 8, 9
DHS Walks Back Scope of Green Card Policy Change
The Department of Homeland Security issued a clarification on Friday, walking back the apparent breadth of last week’s announcement that most immigrants in the United States seeking green cards would be required to leave the country first and apply from abroad. DHS emphasized that individual immigration officers retain case-by-case discretion, and that those holding dual-intent visas such as H-1B work visas, along with those seeking humanitarian relief, would generally not be required to leave. Immigration attorneys said the clarification resolved some confusion but that key questions about who would actually be required to depart remain unanswered. 10, 11
Trump Opens Federal Lands to Off-Road Vehicle Access
President Trump signed an executive order on Friday rescinding two decades-old executive orders that had imposed restrictions on off-road vehicle use on federal public lands. The White House said the action eliminates what it described as vague and burdensome environmental standards and directs federal agencies to revise the regulations adopted under the now-rescinded orders. Conservation groups warned that the change could cause lasting damage to wildlife habitats and landscapes managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. 12, 13

Louisiana Passes Map That Dismantles a Majority-Black District
The Louisiana Legislature gave final approval Friday to a new congressional map that eliminates one of the state’s two majority-Black districts, with the state Senate passing the bill 28 to 10 along strict party lines. The map is expected to give Republicans a 5-to-1 advantage in Louisiana’s six-seat congressional delegation, up from the current 4-to-2 split. Republicans acted after the U.S. Supreme Court’s April ruling invalidated the prior court-ordered map as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, a decision broadly seen as weakening the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Governor Jeff Landry is expected to sign the legislation, and voting rights advocates have pledged to challenge it in court. 14, 15, 16
First Post-Runoff Poll Shows Talarico Edging Paxton in Texas
A survey by Texas Public Opinion Research released Friday shows Democrat James Talarico leading Republican Ken Paxton 47 percent to 44 percent among likely general election voters, within the poll’s 2.8 percentage-point margin of error. The result comes just days after Paxton defeated four-term incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Republican runoff. Nearly one-third of Cornyn voters told pollsters they now plan to back Talarico in November, and Cook Political Report has already shifted its Texas Senate race rating from “likely Republican” to “lean Republican.” 17, 18, 19
Whitmer Says No to 2028 White House Run, Then Backtracks
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer told a Detroit television reporter Thursday morning that she “will not be” among the candidates running for president in 2028, appearing to put months of speculation to rest. Hours later, during an on-stage interview at the Mackinac Policy Conference, she walked the statement back, saying “never say never” and adding “at this juncture, I’ve got nothing to announce.” Whitmer is term-limited and leaves office at the end of 2026. 20, 21, 22
