Iran Still Silent as U.S. Strikes Oil Tankers, Ceasefire Holds
A tenuous ceasefire held Saturday after the United States struck two Iranian oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, deepening uncertainty over peace talks. Iran’s foreign ministry said Saturday it is still reviewing the U.S. peace proposal and would respond “at the appropriate time,” dismissing American-set deadlines as meaning “nothing.” President Trump told reporters he expects Iran’s answer “any minute,” while U.S. Central Command said the ceasefire remains technically in effect. 1, 2, 3
Trump Confirms Plan to Oust FDA Commissioner Makary
The White House confirmed Saturday it has approved a plan to remove FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, ending days of speculation. Senior administration officials cited disputes over flavored vape approvals, drug policy, and abortion medication rules. A final decision on a successor has not been announced, and Trump told reporters Friday evening he was not yet looking for someone new to lead the agency. 4, 5, 6
Supreme Court Keeps Abortion Pill Access Open Past Monday
The Supreme Court extended its temporary stay protecting nationwide mail and telehealth access to the abortion pill mifepristone past the May 11 deadline on Saturday. The order allows the FDA’s 2023 telemedicine dispensing policy to remain in place while justices consider whether to issue a longer-term ruling. A Louisiana-led coalition had argued the FDA violated the Administrative Procedure Act by permitting mail delivery of the drug. 7, 8
Trump Heads to Beijing Thursday for High-Stakes Xi Summit
President Trump departs Thursday for Beijing, where he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15 for the first U.S. presidential visit to China since 2017. The two-day summit is expected to address trade tariffs, Iran, Taiwan, and rare-earth supply chains. The trip comes just days after a federal court again struck down Trump’s 10% global tariffs, potentially undercutting his leverage in the trade negotiations. 9, 10
Redistricting Wave Shaping Republican House Advantage
The New York Times reported Saturday that a string of redistricting decisions over the past ten days has significantly tilted the congressional map toward Republicans heading into the 2026 midterms. Court rulings in Virginia and legislative action in Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina combined could yield Republicans as many as ten additional safe House seats. Democrats say the cumulative impact threatens their path back to a House majority. 11, 12

Alabama Signs Redistricting Bills, Awaits Federal Court Action
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed two redistricting bills into law Saturday, authorizing special congressional primaries if federal courts lift injunctions blocking the state’s 2023 map. The legislation passed on a party-line vote after five days of a special session and will take effect only if courts allow Alabama to abandon a court-ordered map that created two districts favorable to Black voters. The May 19 primary will proceed as planned under the current map. 13, 14
South Carolina Senate Uncertain on Clyburn District Redistricting
South Carolina’s Senate remained undecided Saturday on whether to take up a House-passed redistricting plan that would redraw the state’s congressional map and potentially eliminate the district held by longtime Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn. The House passed the amendment on a largely party-line vote, with Trump reportedly calling Senate leaders personally to press for action. The state legislature is scheduled to adjourn May 14, leaving little time for the Senate to act. 15, 16
Tennessee Map Lawsuit Expands as NAACP Seeks Injunction
A federal judge in Nashville on Saturday was reviewing an emergency motion filed by the NAACP seeking to block implementation of Tennessee’s newly enacted congressional map, which Governor Bill Lee signed into law May 7. A separate lawsuit filed by Democratic candidates and voters argues the map violates First and Fourteenth Amendment rights. The map carves Memphis’s majority-Black district into three Republican-leaning seats and has drawn protests at the state capitol. 17, 18
