Trump Pumps Brakes on Iran Deal After One-Day Rally
One day after announcing that a peace memorandum with Iran was “largely negotiated,” President Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday that he has directed his negotiators “not to rush into a deal,” stating that “time is on our side.” Trump confirmed the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz “will remain fully intact until a deal is finalized, certified, and signed.” Senior Republican lawmakers warned that a premature agreement could be a “disastrous mistake.” Talks continue through Pakistan as an intermediary, with significant disagreements over Iran’s nuclear stockpile and sanctions relief still unresolved. 1, 2, 3
Trump Push to Build Citizenship Voter Lists Under Fire
The New York Times reported on Sunday that the Trump administration’s effort to build state-by-state citizenship registries for voter eligibility verification is facing significant practical and legal obstacles. A Justice Department lawyer acknowledged in a recent federal court hearing that the lists being compiled under a March executive order are likely to be imperfect and that “no responsible state” should use them to remove voters from the rolls without independent verification. The DOJ has active lawsuits against more than two dozen states that have refused to turn over detailed voter registration data, and eight of those suits have already been dismissed by federal judges. 4, 5
Hard-Line GOP Lawmakers Revolt Against Iran Deal Terms
President Trump’s emerging framework to end the U.S.-Israel war with Iran drew sharp criticism on Sunday from hard-line Republicans who argue the known terms fall dangerously short of what the U.S. should demand. Several lawmakers and conservative commentators expressed concern that allowing Iran to retain any nuclear infrastructure would render the military campaign meaningless. PBS NewsHour and the Associated Press both reported that the pushback is coming primarily from members who want Iran fully stripped of its nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities before any sanctions relief is considered. 6, 7
DOJ Moves to Formally Erase Last Jan. 6 Convictions
Following its removal of January 6 case records from the Justice Department website on Saturday, the DOJ on Sunday continued processing its request to formally dismiss the remaining seditious conspiracy charges against leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, a step that would erase the most serious criminal convictions stemming from the Capitol attack. Federal prosecutors filed the motions with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. The January 6 investigation was the largest criminal inquiry in DOJ history, ultimately charging nearly 1,600 individuals. 8, 9
Legal Experts Warn Green Card Policy Could Trap Hundreds of Thousands
Legal immigration advocates and attorneys raised fresh alarms on Sunday over the Trump administration’s new green card policy, announced Saturday, which requires most foreigners already living legally in the United States to leave the country and apply from their home nations. Experts noted that returning home could trigger 10-year reentry bars for those who overstayed visas, even by a single day, effectively making the policy far harsher in practice than it appears on paper. The rule reverses a 50-year practice and could affect more than 500,000 applicants per year, including students, H-1B workers, and spouses of U.S. citizens. 10, 11

Pennsylvania Primary Turnout Signals Trouble for GOP Governor Bid
A new Spotlight PA analysis published on Sunday found that Democratic turnout in Pennsylvania’s May 20 primary outpaced Republican turnout by a significant margin, with more than 1.1 million Democrats casting ballots for Gov. Josh Shapiro compared to roughly 640,000 Republicans for GOP challenger Treasurer Stacy Garrity. Political analysts caution that off-year primaries are imperfect predictors, but the 5-to-3 Democratic advantage in raw turnout, combined with Shapiro’s $37 million fundraising lead over Garrity’s $1.4 million, raises early warning signs for Republicans heading into the November governor’s race. 12, 13
