Iran Ceasefire on the Brink as U.S. and Iran Trade Fire
Just hours after President Trump launched “Project Freedom” on Monday to escort stranded tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran responded with missiles and drone strikes against U.S. warships and the United Arab Emirates. U.S. Central Command reported destroying six Iranian small boats along with incoming missiles and drones. Iran’s strikes also hit an oil installation in the UAE’s Fujairah region, injuring three workers and temporarily closing UAE airports. Trump warned Iran would be “blown off the face of the earth” if attacks on U.S. ships continue. 1, 2, 3
Supreme Court Temporarily Restores Abortion Pill Mail Access
Justice Samuel Alito on Monday issued an administrative stay blocking a 5th Circuit ruling from last Friday that had reinstated a requirement mandating in-person medical visits to obtain the abortion pill mifepristone. The order restores the ability to get the drug via telemedicine and mail nationwide, at least through May 11. The full court is expected to rule on whether to extend the stay before that date. Manufacturers Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro had filed emergency applications to the Supreme Court to intervene. 4, 5, 6
Gunman Fires at Secret Service Near White House
A man was shot and wounded Monday afternoon near the Washington Monument after he opened fire on Secret Service officers. Plainclothes agents had observed the suspect carrying a concealed firearm in the vicinity of the White House complex and alerted uniformed officers. The suspect fled when approached, discharged his weapon, and was wounded in return fire. A 15-year-old bystander was also struck. The incident occurred just over a week after the attempted attack on Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. 7, 8, 9
Supreme Court Clears Path for Louisiana Redistricting
The U.S. Supreme Court issued an emergency order Monday allowing Louisiana to proceed with drawing new congressional maps ahead of the November midterms. The order, which expedites a process that could give Republicans an additional House seat, drew a sharp dissent from Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who called the decision “unwarranted and unwise” and warned the court was influencing implementation rather than simply deciding the law. Louisiana had already suspended its May 16 congressional primary to allow time for a new map. 10, 11
Congress Returns; Democrats Press Iran War Accountability
Congress returned from a weeklong recess on Monday, and Senate Democrats wasted little time pressing their case over the Iran conflict. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer took to the Senate floor to declare that President Trump is “responsible” for the current military escalation and sharply questioned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s competence and judgment. Democrats have pledged to continue forcing accountability votes as diplomatic negotiations with Iran appear increasingly fragile in the wake of Monday’s attacks. 12, 13

Tennessee Redistricting Session Convenes Today in Nashville
Tennessee’s special legislative session to redraw the state’s congressional maps convenes this morning in Nashville. Republicans, who hold supermajorities in both chambers, are expected to split the Memphis-based 9th Congressional District into multiple Republican-friendly seats, effectively eliminating the state’s only Democratic-held House seat. Civil rights groups and Democrats have pledged legal challenges. Rep. Steve Cohen and state Rep. Justin Pearson, who have been running for reelection under the current lines, would be forced to restart their campaigns. 14, 15
Alabama Redistricting Sparks Civil Rights Protests at Statehouse
Hundreds of protesters gathered Monday outside the Alabama Statehouse in Montgomery as the state’s special redistricting session moved forward. Demonstrators carried signs reading “No New Map” and “We Fight Back,” opposing Republican plans that would reduce Black voting power in the state’s congressional districts. Alabama has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to lift a lower court order blocking implementation of a GOP-drawn map that would likely eliminate one majority-Black congressional district and cost Democrats a seat. 16, 17
