Iran Awaits Ceasefire Deal; Trump Calls Clash a ‘Love Tap’
The United States and Iran exchanged drone, missile, and gunfire near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, yet President Trump insisted the ceasefire remained intact, calling the Iranian aggression a “love tap.” Secretary of State Rubio said he expected Iran’s formal response to the U.S. peace framework by Friday evening. Iran’s foreign minister accused Washington of a “reckless military adventure” each time a diplomatic solution nears. U.S. Central Command confirmed it neutralized incoming threats and struck Iranian military facilities responsible for the attacks. 1, 2, 3
Trump Plans to Fire FDA Commissioner Makary
President Trump has signed off on a plan to fire FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, according to multiple senior administration sources, following disputes over drug approvals, vaping regulations, and his handling of the abortion pill mifepristone. When asked by a reporter Friday evening whether he planned to remove Makary, Trump responded evasively, saying “I’ve been reading it, I know about it.” Anti-abortion advocates and the Wall Street Journal had called for his dismissal in recent days. A final decision had not yet been formally announced. 4, 5, 6
Supreme Court Extends Abortion Pill Access Past Monday Deadline
The Supreme Court extended its temporary stay protecting nationwide mail and telehealth access to the abortion pill mifepristone past the May 11 deadline, after receiving briefing from all parties. The court’s order allows the FDA’s 2023 policy permitting mifepristone prescriptions via telemedicine and mail delivery to remain in effect while the justices weigh whether to issue a longer-term order. A Louisiana-led coalition had argued the FDA violated the Administrative Procedure Act and the 1873 Comstock Act. 7, 8, 9
Trump Seeks Federal Grip on State Elections
A Reuters investigation published Friday revealed that the Trump administration has been pursuing a broader-than-previously-known effort to gain federal control over elections in at least eight states, using Justice Department investigations, FBI raids, and demands for access to balloting systems and voter registration data. The Constitution assigns the administration of federal elections to state governments, subject to acts of Congress. State election officials from both parties have expressed concern about federal overreach. 10, 11
DOJ Appeals Tariff Ruling; Case Heads to Federal Circuit
The Justice Department filed a formal notice of appeal on Friday in the Court of International Trade, challenging Thursday’s 2-1 ruling that declared President Trump’s 10% global tariffs unlawful. The case now moves to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which has previously ruled against Trump tariffs imposed under emergency authority. The immediate impact of Thursday’s ruling remains narrow, applying only to the state of Washington and two small businesses that had standing in the case. 12, 13

Virginia Court Blocks Democrats’ Redistricting Map
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled Friday that Democratic lawmakers failed to meet the procedural requirements to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot, voiding a new congressional map that voters had narrowly approved in an April special election. The ruling keeps Virginia’s current 6-5 Democratic-Republican House split in place for the 2026 midterms, eliminating what Democrats had hoped would be a 10-1 map that could have yielded four additional House seats. The blow significantly dims Democratic hopes of offsetting Republican redistricting gains in other states, particularly Tennessee. 14, 15, 16
Democrats Sue Over Tennessee’s New Congressional Map
A coalition of Democratic candidates and voters filed a federal lawsuit late Thursday challenging Tennessee’s newly enacted congressional map, which Governor Bill Lee signed into law after a party-line legislative vote. The plaintiffs argue that redrawing district lines within months of an August primary is unconstitutional and violates candidates’ and voters’ First and Fourteenth Amendment rights. The NAACP filed a separate emergency lawsuit in state court Friday seeking to block implementation of the map, which carves Memphis’s majority-Black district into three Republican-leaning seats. 17, 18
New York Governor Orders ICE Agents to Unmask
New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday ordered federal ICE agents operating in the state to stop wearing face masks during enforcement operations, calling the practice “nothing short of an intimidation tactic.” Her order also prohibits ICE from entering schools, libraries, churches, hospitals, and polling sites without a judicial warrant, and bars local police from cooperating with immigration operations. Trump’s border enforcement coordinator Tom Homan responded by threatening to “flood the zone” with agents if New York does not comply with federal immigration law. 19, 20
