Iran Peace Talks Collapse After 21-Hour Marathon
Vice President JD Vance returned to the United States on Sunday after 21 hours of negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a peace agreement with Iran. Vance said Iran refused to commit to abandoning its nuclear weapons program, calling it the core American demand. Iran’s foreign ministry characterized the U.S. terms as “excessive” and said it never expected a deal in the first round of talks. Pakistan, which hosted and mediated the discussions, urged both sides to uphold the existing ceasefire and pledged to continue facilitating dialogue.1,2,3
Trump Warns China: Arm Iran, Pay the Price
President Trump issued a sharp warning to China on Saturday, telling reporters outside the White House that Beijing would face “big problems” if it delivers air defense systems to Iran. The warning followed a CNN report, citing U.S. intelligence sources, that China was preparing to ship shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile systems known as MANPADs to Tehran within weeks. China denied the reports, calling them “entirely fabricated.” Trump had previously threatened 50 percent tariffs on any country supplying weapons to Iran.4,5,6
DHS Shutdown Clock Ticks as Congress Returns Monday
The Department of Homeland Security partial shutdown, now in its 57th day and the longest in American history, reaches a critical inflection point Monday when Congress returns from its two-week Easter recess. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune had announced a two-track deal before the break, but no vote has yet taken place. The Senate previously passed bipartisan legislation funding most of DHS except ICE and Border Patrol, while the House passed a 60-day continuing resolution that funds all of DHS. The two chambers remain at an impasse.7,8
Congress Expulsion Vote Looms Over Swalwell
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) announced Saturday she will file a privileged motion to expel Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) from Congress when the House reconvenes Monday, forcing a floor vote that would require a two-thirds majority to succeed. The move follows Saturday’s announcement by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that it has opened a criminal investigation into a sexual assault allegation against Swalwell stemming from an incident at a New York City hotel in 2024. Swalwell, the front-runner in California’s June 2 governor’s primary, has denied all allegations and vowed to remain in the race.9,10,11

Virginia Governor Faces Final Hours on Hundreds of Bills
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger is racing against a midnight Monday deadline to sign, veto, or seek amendments on several hundred bills passed by the state legislature last month. Under Virginia law, any bill on which she takes no action automatically becomes law. Spanberger has already signed batches of legislation targeting prescription drug costs, housing supply, and energy rates, all with bipartisan support. She is weighing a collective bargaining bill and several other contested measures that could draw opposition from business groups before the April 13 deadline expires.12,13
Florida Redistricting Session Opens April 20
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s special legislative session on congressional redistricting opens April 20, with Republicans targeting up to five additional GOP House seats ahead of the November midterms. The session is designed in part to await potential guidance from the Supreme Court’s pending decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which could reshape how majority-minority districts are drawn under the Voting Rights Act. Democrats warn the maps will face immediate legal challenge under the Florida Fair Districts Amendment, which prohibits partisan gerrymandering.14,15
Mamdani Marks 100 Days With Queens Rally Tonight
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani holds his 100-day address Sunday evening at the Knockdown Center in Queens, touting a record-low homicide rate, universal childcare for 2-year-olds beginning in September, and a reinforced sanctuary city policy. The milestone comes as his administration quietly identified $1.3 billion in additional budget savings, scaling back some campaign promises to address a significant city deficit. Both the New York Times and Politico described early progress on core promises while noting the fiscal constraints now shaping his agenda.16,17

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
New Publication Focused on the Foundations of Democracy
Yesterday, we closed out our three-part series on the status of Project 2025 and a hypothetical Project 2028 with a capstone article titled, How the Center Can Own Tomorrow’s Agenda and the conclusion is simple: our democratic future is at risk if the center does not take action.
Starting this Monday, April 13, we’re launching a brand-new publication: Foundations. Over ten days, we’ll lay out the nine governing principles that can preserve our democratic form of government. Not as a rebuttal to the left or the right, but as a proactive agenda built to outlast any election, any administration, and any political movement.
We at the center, politically homeless but not without purpose, account for 45 percent of this country, and the work of securing our democratic future begins Monday morning.
This is our opportunity. Please join us.
