U.S. and Iran Reach Two-Week Ceasefire; Strait of Hormuz to Reopen
President Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran Tuesday evening, backing away from his earlier threat that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The deal, brokered by Pakistan, requires Iran to allow oil and gas shipments through the strait to resume. Both sides declared victory: Iran’s Supreme National Security Council framed the agreement as a concession by the United States, while the White House called it “a total and complete victory.” Talks are expected to begin in Islamabad on Friday toward a permanent settlement.1,2,3
Democrats Vow War Powers Vote Upon Return; Republicans Mixed on Iran Ceasefire
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced Tuesday night that Democrats will call up a war powers resolution as soon as Congress returns next week, putting Republicans on the record regarding the conflict. Some GOP members expressed relief at the ceasefire while others, like Senator Lindsey Graham, urged Congress to review Iran’s 10-point framework before any permanent agreement. Democratic Senator Ed Markey called on Congress to reconvene immediately, stating that Trump “cannot issue threats of war crimes without facing consequences.” The ceasefire’s announcement muted, but did not extinguish, calls from some Democrats to invoke the 25th Amendment.4,5,6
Trump Meets NATO’s Rutte Amid Alliance Tensions Over Iran War
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte met with President Trump at the White House on Wednesday, aiming to ease tensions that have built since Trump called the alliance a “paper tiger” after European members declined to join the Iran conflict. With the ceasefire now in place, Trump also urged NATO allies to assist in securing safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, though European diplomats indicated their nations are unlikely to participate in mine-clearing operations while hostilities remain unresolved. A 2023 law, co-authored by Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his Senate tenure, requires a two-thirds Senate vote to authorize a U.S. withdrawal from NATO.7,8
GOP Holds Georgia’s 14th District, but 25-Point Swing Alarms Republicans
Trump-endorsed Republican Clay Fuller won Tuesday’s special election runoff in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, defeating Democrat Shawn Harris by roughly 12 points to hold the seat vacated by Marjorie Taylor Greene. Republicans retain a 218-214 House majority with one independent and two vacant seats. However, every county in the heavily Republican district shifted double digits toward Democrats compared to 2024, representing an overall 25-point swing that strategists from both parties viewed as a warning sign heading into November.9,10,11
DHS Shutdown Nears Day 54; House Expected to Act When Congress Returns April 13
The partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security continues into its 54th day, with Congress not scheduled to return until April 13. Republican leaders have announced a two-track plan to pass a Senate-approved bill funding most of DHS while separately pursuing ICE funding through budget reconciliation, but the actual votes have not yet occurred. Over 500 TSA officers have resigned during the shutdown, and airport wait times remain elevated across the country.12

Wisconsin Liberals Expand Supreme Court Majority to 5-2; Control Locked In Through 2030
Liberal Appeals Court Judge Chris Taylor won Tuesday’s Wisconsin Supreme Court race, defeating conservative Judge Maria Lazar and expanding the court’s liberal majority from 4-3 to 5-2. The result is the fourth consecutive Wisconsin Supreme Court victory for liberals and locks in their control through at least 2030, meaning the court will remain under liberal direction during the 2028 presidential election. The court is expected to weigh in on congressional redistricting and voting access cases heading into the midterms.13,14
Swalwell Campaign Denies Sexual Misconduct Allegations as California Governor’s Race Tightens
The campaign of Representative Eric Swalwell, a leading Democratic candidate for California governor, pushed back Tuesday against viral social media allegations that multiple former staffers plan to accuse him of sexual harassment and misconduct. Campaign spokesperson Micah Beasley called the claims ‘a false, outrageous rumor’ being spread by opponents, and noted that no ethics complaints or NDAs involving staff have been filed in Swalwell’s 13 years in Congress. The allegations originate from progressive activist attorney Cheyenne Hunt, who has not publicly named any of the women she says she is representing.15,16
Florida Redistricting Special Session Set for April 20; Democrats Warn of Legal Fight
Governor Ron DeSantis’s special session to redraw Florida’s congressional districts is scheduled to convene April 20, part of the broader Republican push to gain additional House seats ahead of November. The effort is complicated by a pending Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which DeSantis has cited as justification for the changes but which has not yet been issued. Recent special election results in Palm Beach County showed a 21-point swing toward Democrats, raising questions among Florida Republicans about the timing and political risks of an aggressive remap.17,18
