Vance Arrives in Pakistan for Historic U.S.-Iran Peace Talks
Vice President JD Vance arrived in Islamabad on Saturday, leading a U.S. delegation that also includes Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner. The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, was already on the ground. The talks mark the highest-level direct exchange between Washington and Tehran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. President Trump said Friday that he sees “no need for a backup plan,” expressing confidence that a deal will be reached.1,2,3
DHS Orders Furloughed Workers Back on the Job Despite Shutdown
The Department of Homeland Security on Friday ordered its approximately 35,000 furloughed employees to return to work beginning Monday, even though the partial government shutdown remains in effect and no funding deal has been reached. The administration cited national security and border operations as its justification. The move creates an immediate legal conflict, as federal law generally prohibits agencies from obligating funds they have not been appropriated. Congressional Democrats immediately called it an illegal end-run around Congress.4,5
Court Hears Challenge to Trump’s Global Tariffs; July Deadline Nears
The U.S. Court of International Trade heard oral arguments on Friday in a legal challenge to President Trump’s 10 percent global tariffs, currently authorized under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 and set to expire on July 24 unless Congress extends them. The tariffs were imposed in February after the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s broader IEEPA-based tariff authority. Legal experts said a ruling against the administration could effectively end Trump’s entire tariff regime ahead of the midterm elections.6,7
Trump Approval Hits New Low as Iran War Fatigue Sets In
A new Silver Bulletin aggregate released Friday puts President Trump’s approval rating at 41 percent, his lowest mark of his second term and a five-point drop since the Iran conflict began in late February. The decline is driven primarily by independent voters, who now disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran war by a 28-point margin. Analysts noted the numbers carry significant implications for Republican incumbents heading into the November midterm elections.8,9

Pelosi and Jeffries Call on Swalwell to Exit Governor’s Race
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Saturday called on Representative Eric Swalwell to withdraw from California’s governor’s race. The statements came after CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle published reports in which a former staffer accused Swalwell of sexual assault on two occasions, and three additional women alleged sexual misconduct. Senator Adam Schiff and other prominent backers withdrew their endorsements. Swalwell denied all allegations and vowed to remain in the race, with California’s June 2 primary fewer than eight weeks away.10,11,12
Idaho Governor Issues Six Vetoes After Legislature Adjourns
Idaho Governor Brad Little issued six vetoes on Friday, one day after the state legislature adjourned its 2026 session. Among the bills rejected were measures that would have restricted certain public health agency powers and limited local zoning authority. Little said three of the vetoes were based on constitutional concerns and three on policy grounds. Idaho’s Republican-dominated legislature has 30 days to reconvene and attempt override votes, though leadership has signaled it does not expect to do so.13,14
NYC Mayor Mamdani Marks 100 Days With Major Sunday Rally
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani delivers a major address Sunday evening at the Knockdown Center in Queens to mark his first 100 days in office. The event highlights accomplishments including record-low homicide rates, expanded childcare, and a reinforced sanctuary city policy. Both Politico and the New York Times published assessments this week noting that Mamdani has made tangible early progress on some promises while scaling others back in the face of a significant budget deficit.15,16
